November 02, 2018 | Cowboy Wrestling
DENVER, Colo. – Oklahoma State heavyweight Derek White highlighted OSU's night at the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic Friday with a come-from-behind, sudden-victory decision over third-ranked Youssif Hemida of Maryland, 7-5.
In the first period, White fell four points behind after a Hemida takedown and two-point nearfall, but he added an escape point to trail 4-1 entering the second frame. The Cowboy scored off the bottom to start the second and was awarded a penalty point with a minute to go. He notched a takedown with 20 seconds remaining in the second to take the lead, but a Hemida escape tied the match and pushed it to sudden victory. White ultimately scored a takedown with 15 seconds remaining in sudden victory to get the win.
Although matches in the NWCA All-Star Classic do not count toward official records, the win over No. 3 Hemida marks the highest-ranked win of White's career at OSU.
Cowboys Kaid Brock and Jacobe Smith joined White at the event but fell in decisions to some of the top-ranked wrestlers in the country.
Brock, a redshirt junior, dropped his bout at 141 pounds to Ohio State All-American Joey McKenna, 11-4, with all of Brock's points coming in the first period. No. 2-ranked McKenna scored five points in the first and a four-point nearfall in the second on his way to the win.
Smith dropped a 10-2 major decision, as he faced Michigan's third-ranked Myles Amine, who finished third at the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Next up, the Pokes compete in an open tournament at Oklahoma City University on Sunday and wrestle their first dual matches in two weeks at South Dakota State and Minnesota.
