Postgame Quotes: OSU vs Charleston
OSU head coach Mike Boynton
Regarding today's game:
"Yeah I love this group. I have been talking about their potential for a long time and I think today was one of those times when you could see a glimmer of it. We're still not whole. We still got a couple guys working their way back for different reasons, but I see what this team can become and I really, really think that it'll be something people really appreciate."
Regarding Michael Weathers:
"Yeah he has a different type of athleticism on his drive where he can creak into cracks and slither around guys, but he can also finish above the rim, and really puts the defense, especially when there's a smaller guard on him, in a tough spot because he is a physical driver and he almost initiates contact himself, so he makes people play on their heels a lot. That gives opportunities for rotations."
Regarding team defense:
"From day one, it is who we have to be for us to have the most success possible. We've got to be a team that no matter who the opponent is, no matter where the game is played, we have to be the hardest playing team on the court. I thought for the most part we were today. We had a few mental lapses but our effort was top-notch today."
Regarding the other team:Â
"What I did see was a really good team on the other side and really good coach and a bunch of guys who have won and have been in an environment like this, and knowing that they would respond, they wouldn't lay down and go away without us making it happen. I thought our guys responded to their run by making a run of our own, and then we closed it out at the free throw line and defensive rebounds."
OSU junior guard Thomas Dziagwa
On their 12-1 run at the end of the first:
"I think every possession recently, we have said every possession is important. I think the guys that were out there were just really dialed in to be honest. I think we just stuck to the game plan."
On his offensive efficiency:
"If shots fall or don't fall I just trust the work I put in. You can't really say anything other than that. I am just focused on getting better every day and putting W's in the win column."
On having four players in double figures:
"It just shows how big of a threat we are. On any given night anyone can have the hot hand and explode for twenty. It just shows how balanced we are, so you can't just shade one guy or two guys. Anyone on the court really can score on any given night"
OSU sophomore guard Michael Weathers
On being back on the court:
"It's like a reunion. I don't feel like we missed a step from when we were playing over the summer, but I am just glad to be back on the court with the guys."
On adjusting to playing regular minutes:
"The first time that I got on the court for those three minutes against UTSA, I was about to pass out, but this game surprisingly was pretty good."
On his mindset offensively:
"I wanted to be efficient and not try to force anything, I just wanted to get these guys involved, like Thomas (Dziagwa) four of six from three. It is just nice that he is out on the court for me to pass to."
Charleston head coach Earl Grant
Opening statement:
"I thought Oklahoma State did a good job. They were prepared to play. Their pressure and athleticism bothered us. We were very uncharacteristic and I give those guys a lot of credit for taking us out of everything we were trying to run."
On Michael Weathers:
"We knew he would eventually play. We knew he was a good player. I saw him when he was at Miami of Ohio, so I knew at some point he would play. Certainly he made a difference and we talked about him being a guy that would make their team look different. We were preparing for him and (Mike) Cunningham to play. Certainly he had a good game tonight and he helps their team."
On Oklahoma State's big offensive runs:
"It was a combination (of things). We didn't stay disciplined. Some of it was because they forced us to get out of character with their athleticism and the way they deny everything. We got up, and then the next two minutes they went on a run. I think the way they play there are going to be runs, there are going to be spurts, depending on your decision making. So if you decide to play really well and you're sound fundamentally, then you can use that pressure against them. But if you show any sign of lack of fundamental moments, they can go on an 8-0 or 10-0 to run quick."
