Gundy Previews, West Virginia, Senior Day
November 12, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy met with members of the media Monday afternoon to discuss his team's upcoming matchup against West Virginia this Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. A look at some of his comments:
On West Virginia:
"I'm pretty familiar with West Virginia and their approach. A lot of similarities to the game we just played. They're very explosive offensively, terrific quarterback play, running the football and they're good up front on offense. (Gary Jennings Jr.), (David Sills V) and (Marcus Simms) make a lot of plays for them. Defensively, they're a good team. A few schools have scored some points on them, some teams, but it's been from big plays. It hasn't been from consistent drives so we'll certainly have our hands full with these guys. We'll need a great week of work. Just the same old 'Coaches Talk.' We had a good workout last night. We'll get some good plans together and go play hard Saturday afternoon."
On his message to the team on Sunday:
"It's the same every week. I wish I could tell you guys that it mattered. I could go back to the story about James Franklin. These guys are in different worlds nowadays, so you tell them the truth. After the Baylor game, I told them that we were undisciplined and had more stupid penalties than I've had probably in my career and didn't have a chance to win. Then after Saturday I told them the same thing I told you guys while I was down there. As a coach, we can't ask them to do anything else than what they did. These guys have practiced well all year. They were enthusiastic and had good effort last night. When I watch things, as long as I see that I'm in a good place because I know that we're getting everything out of them that we ask."
On anything that stood out to him when re-watching Saturday's game:
"I think the obvious – our offensive line played really well. Justice Hill going out wasn't the best thing that could've happened to us, but Chuba (Hubbard) came in, ran hard and gave us some gas. Wide receivers were able to make plays. Taylor (Cornelius) was fantastic. Defensively, they rushed the ball on us. We had some concerns about that based on what we had to try and do to prevent throws down the field. There's some give and take there. The quarterback was a little quicker, and faster, than what I thought live. I wish we would've kicked the ball better. Everything else was pretty much what I thought. I was proud of the guys."
On Chuba Hubbard's fumble:
"I thought he had good ball security. I thought he took a hit from multiple directions. Sometimes that's going to happen with young players. Those guys have been really good and those guys take a lot of hits. When Justice Hill went out, more of the workload went on to him. At times when you are young like they are, fatigue can set in and the first thing that can happen is the ball can come out. It wasn't just a soft or light blow, it was multiple angles and he took a really good hit. We've addressed it, nobody knows it more than him. He will be better."
On Zach Sinor:
"He got dinged on the sideline over so we didn't feel comfortable putting him in. He was little woozy. Matt Hockett came in and did a nice job."
On Kanion Williams:
"We are going to redshirt him. The total number of plays that he would be involved in, for his career, it's a better option. Selfishly for us, it'd probably be better to play him. You put all the formulas together, the percentages of the plays that he would play with the number of players on the field - it's not enough to say it's worth burning a year over, in our opinion. If he were to come in and put his foot down and say. 'It doesn't matter. It's my career. I want to play,' then we will play him."
On Taylor Cornelius:
"He is in his 10th game and he just keeps on getting better and better from experience. He's paid his dues and he has worked hard and it's awesome for him that we were here to stick with him and believe in him. The guy is a competitor, he is tough. He takes a lot of hits, keeps fighting, never gives up and made a lot of plays. (Cornelius) is a 'salt of the earth,' 'blue collar,' small West Texas kid. Probably raised a little differently than some kids nowadays. The values that have been instilled in him with his mom and dad were, 'You need to do what you are supposed to do and figure it out,' and that's what he did. Its worked out well for him."
On Tylan Wallace's Biletnikoff Award chances:
"He is further ahead of guys that we've had that have won the award and it's not even close. I don't know how he wouldn't be in [the next cut for the Biletnikoff Award]. He is tough, competitive, unselfish and he is willing to do whatever we ask him to do. He will go block, he is not just a receiver. If you go ask him to block, he will take pride in it."
