Cross Country Squads Jump in National Rankings
October 30, 2018 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER—The Oklahoma State men's cross country team rose two spots to No. 21 and the women's team jumped back into the rankings at No. 26 in the Week 6 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches' Poll, the organization announced Tuesday.
The Cowboys' upward trend in the poll comes after OSU finished in second place at the Big 12 Championships last weekend. OSU lost by a mere 8 points to No. 6 Iowa State.
The Cowboys put three runners in the top five with Isai Rodriguez finishing as the conference runner-up, Ashenafi Hatte taking third and Luis Martinez crossing the line fourth.
OSU is one of two Big 12 teams to be ranked, joining No. 6 Iowa State. Texas received votes as well.
The Cowgirls made a return to the poll after a short stint of being on the outside. The OSU women climbed up to No. 26 after their runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championships. The Cowgirls came up short in their effort to top Iowa State, finishing 17 point back of the Cyclones.
Sinclaire Johnson once again had a phenomenal race, coming in at No. 2 and challenging for what would have been the Cowgirls' first individual conference champion since 1989. The sophomore beat out two-time conference individual champion Sharon Lokedi, who finished fifth.
The Cowgirls are one of two Big 12 teams to be ranked on the women's side. Iowa State is the lone Big 12 team ahead of them at No. 15. Texas and West Virginia were unranked, but received votes.
This is the 111th straight week the OSU cross country team has been ranked nationally and the Cowgirls have been ranked in the national coaches' poll for 27 of the past 30 weeks.
Both teams are back in action at 11 a.m. on Nov. 9 in Peoria, Illinois, for the NCAA Midwest Regional. The OSU men look to qualify for their 16th straight NCAA Championship appearance and the Cowgirls will try to return to the final race of the year for the sixth season under Dave Smith.
