Cowboys Discuss Baylor
October 30, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Select members of the Oklahoma State football team met with media after practice Tuesday to preview the Cowboys' upcoming visit to Waco, Texas, where they will square off with Baylor in a key Big 12 matchup. A look at some of their comments:
Quarterback Taylor Cornelius
On getting back to practice after defeating Texas:
"It was nice. That one's over with and we're moving on to the next one. We've kept that same mindset going into each week - a new week and a new week of preparation. Same old, same old."
On how the Cowboys were able to knock off the Longhorns:
"I felt like, deep down, we knew what we were about. We've stayed true to that through the entire year. Just staying positive."
On Baylor:
"They've got a good defensive line and a good secondary. They're a good team all around and they were a couple plays away from beating Texas, too, so they're a good defense and able to make a lot of plays."
Cornerback A.J. Green
On stopping Texas last week:
"We knew we had a big challenge coming in with their wide receivers. We knew they'd have a good gameplan and try to get them the ball, but we just buckled down and competed."
On being more physical than he has been in the past against Texas:
"That's the first time that I felt like I was really sought out on the field, so I just had to respond and step up to the challenge."
On how the defense was able to succeed vs. the Longhorns:
"I feel like it was good and we were flying to the ball. There was a play on film that Coach (Jim) Knowles showed where all 10 guys - the backside corner is supposed to keep contain and everything - but all 10 guys were around the ball and it was a beautiful picture."
Safety Malcolm Rodriguez
On the defense's success against Texas:
"We were just eager to get out there for homecoming. We were all fired up. We just wanted to come out there and make plays."
On how to keep the success going:
"We just have to go down there (to Waco) just like we did against Texas and come out with our heads on fire and just play together."
On the grind of the Big 12 conference schedule:
"The Big 12 is always a grind. There's a ton of good competition."
Running Back Chuba Hubbard
On the offense against Texas:
"It looked good. There was a lot of good things, but there were a lot of bad things too. When you win, you sometimes forget that you make mistakes. There are definitely some mistakes that we have to fix and there are definitely some big plays that we missed out on. It was a good game and a good win, but it's on to Baylor now. That's our focus."
On the difficulty of getting past such a big win:
"Win or loss, that's just our mindset. That's a part of our culture. Once it hits Sunday, the game is in the past. We watch film, but today is a new day. It was a great practice, but we're ready for Baylor. Texas is the past."
On his mindset and role in the offense:
"I just try to do my part. Whenever they need me to go in, I'll be ready whether that is pass blocking, running or catching."
Cowboy Back Jelani Woods
On gaining trust from the coaching staff:
"It made me feel really good. It made me feel like I'm a good asset to the team. They have trust in me and I can contribute."
On his touchdown catch:
"I was just trying to run the play like how we designed it for that week. It just turned out to be a good play for us at the time. I was really grateful for it."
On his blocking:
"I'm getting really comfortable. Just seeing the different styles of play the Big 12 runs. Just going up against the top defenders, defensive tackles, defensive ends and linebackers is really making me more comfortable and setting me up for success later on."
Linebacker Justin Phillips
On changes for the linebackers in the defensive schemes:
"I actually think we didn't change too much. [For] simplifying plays, they probably only cut down a few plays, not too many."
On getting comfortable with the defensive schemes:
"You can tell during practices how the guys are feeling about the gameplan and the schemes. We have short weeks around here so when you put in a lot of plays, you feel rushed and things aren't always as smooth during practice. When the playbook gets cut down a little bit, the guys are flying around and feeling a little bit more secure with what they have to do."
On the importance of energy for defensive players:
"On defense, we have to set our own tone. We can't sit back and let the offense set the tone in any shape or way. We have to go out there and be the hunters. If we sit back and things start slow for us, it's not going to go too well. We just have to set the tempo and make sure things are going at the start."
