FWAA Tabs Cowboy Football as National Team of the Week
October 29, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State, coming off a 38-35 victory over No. 6 Texas this past Saturday, has been named as the Reveal Suits National Team of the Week, the Football Writers Association of America announced Monday afternoon.
It is the third time that the Cowboys (5-3; 2-3 Big 12) have earned the honor. OSU previously was recognized on the weekend of Oct. 11, 2008 (def. No. 3 Missouri, 28-23) and the weekend of Nov. 23, 2013 (def. No. 3 Baylor, 49-17).
Oklahoma State's victory over the Longhorns was the Cowboys' fourth straight win against opponents ranked in the top 25 of the AP Poll and marked coach Mike Gundy's seventh career triumph over an AP top-10 opponent.
It was also OSU's fourth-straight win over Texas, extending its longest win streak in the series between the rivals.
Quarterback Taylor Cornelius starred Saturday against Texas, completing 23 of his 34 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns. Cornelius also scored two touchdowns on the ground, including a 10-yard scamper that sealed the Cowboys' victory.
The fifth-year senior was recognized as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, a Manning Award Star of the Week and was named to the Davey O'Brien "Great 8" list for his performance in the game.
OSU punter Zach Sinor was also recognized by the Big 12, as he shared Special Teams Player of the Week honors with Kansas' Gabriel Rui. Sinor punted four times against Texas, averaging 45.0 yards per kick. His 57-yard effort in the fourth quarter flipped the field in favor of the Cowboys and pinned the Longhorns at their own 2-yard line.
Sophomore wide receiver Tylan Wallace was another who put on a shining display under the lights of Boone Pickens Stadium, hauling in 10 passes for a career-high 222 receiving yards and two touchdowns. His 222 receiving yards is the second-highest total by an OSU underclassmen, trailing only Dez Bryant's 236 as a sophomore vs. Houston in 2008.
Wallace's output was his fifth 100-yard game of the season. The only other cowboy underclassmen to reach that mark are James Washington (five as a sophomore in 2015), Josh Stewart (five in 2012), Justin Blackmon (12 as a sophomore in 2010) and Dez Bryant (six as a sophomore in 2008).
The five 100-yard receiving games also ties him for 10th-most in a career and in a season at OSU.
Defensively, OSU held its opposition in check, with cornerback A.J. Green playing a key role in stopping the Longhorn offense.
Green gave up five inches to Texas' 6-foot-6 wide receiver Collin Johnson, but limited the Longhorn to just five catches on 13 targets. The Cowboy corner also held Johnson to 15 yards under his season average and snapped his four-game streak with a receiving touchdown.
Oklahoma State will look to build off its highest ranked win since 2015 when the Cowboys travel to Waco, Texas, for a Saturday showdown with Baylor. Kickoff at McLane Stadium is set for 11 a.m. CT on Fox Sports 1.
