STILLWATER - Oklahoma State welcomes its longtime rival, No. 6/7 Texas, to Stillwater this weekend for the Cowboys' annual homecoming game, and Saturday's matchup under the lights at Boone Pickens Stadium figures to be one of the Big 12's most interesting encounters this year.
The Longhorns (6-1; 4-0) have been one of the nation's top teams since falling to Maryland, 34-29, on opening weekend. Since then, coach Tom Herman and Co. have rattled off six-straight wins, including victories over No. 22 USC, No. 17 TCU and No. 7 Oklahoma.
Their offensive attack has been spearheaded dual-threat quarterback Sam Ehlingher, who has passed for 1534 yards and rushed for 230 so far this season. Ehlinger's 11:2 touchdown-to-interception ratio is one of the best marks in the Big 12 Conference, and when coupled with the six rushing touchdowns he has scored, Ehlinger ranks near the top of the league's most dynamic offensive threats.
He has distributed the ball well to several of Texas' top targets out wide, but Lil'Jordan Humphrey and Collin Johnson have been his most frequent targets. Those two have caught 42 and 41 passes this year, respectively, and racked up more than 1,000 receiving yards and nine touchdowns between them.
In the backfield, Keaontay Ingram and Tre Watson have carried the bulk of the Longhorns' rushing load, tallying 743 yards on 155 combined carries.
Three Texas defenders have logged at least 40 tackles so far this season, with Brandon Jones' 49 total tackles leading the herd. Gary Johnson and P.J. Locke III are close on his heels, and Johnson's nine tackles for loss is the top mark among UT defenders this year.
Oklahoma State faces arguably its toughest test of the year at a critical point in the season this Saturday in Stillwater. Homecoming has always been a date circled on the calendar, and a primetime kickoff only strengthens the excitement around town. Kickoff at Boone Pickens Stadium is set for 7 p.m. CT on ABC.
