Cowboys Preview Iowa State
October 02, 2018 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Select members of the Oklahoma State football team met with the media Tuesday after practice to discuss Saturday's matchup with Iowa State. Here is a look at some of their comments:
Quarterback Taylor Cornelius
On the performance against Kansas:
"It was good. I thought everyone played well. Obviously Justice (Hill) had a lot of carries. It was a confidence builder, but we're moving on from it."
On the work he, Landon Wolf and others put in to get to this point:
"It was just every day. It was a lot of work and trying to maximize every rep we got. I guess it has showed."
On Justice Hill's performance against Kansas:
"I got to sit back and watch him run. I just kind of had to hand the ball off to him. He had a heck of a game, and he's capable of that every week. He's a great back and he just proved it last week again."
Defensive Tackle Enoch Smith Jr.
On his thoughts about the current season so far:
"We're winning as a team so I can't argue with the results. We took a loss one week, but we built on that and I'm not here for individual stats. I'm here for the team's success and helping us get to the (College Football) Playoff and the Big 12 Championship. The team is doing well, so I'm doing well."
On how he can take his game to the next level:
"I would just say that I have to take it one play at a time. Even if I mess up on a play, don't look back at it. Focus on the next play and live to play another down."
On if his approach changes now that he will step into the starting lineup:
"Not at all. My approach is still the same. I have a job to do like everyone else on the field. We have 11 players on the field. If I do my job and the other 10 do theirs, we'll be successful."
Defensive End Jordan Brailford:
On the defense stepping up despite injuries
"Going into Kansas, we had to put it upon ourselves to keep our energy up, keep each other motivated and have high energy throughout the game."
On the defense's mentality dealing with injuries:
"We keep it as the 'next man up' attitude. We all practice the same positions. Everybody learns the same plays and we expect the next guy to know just as much as the guy ahead of him."
Linebacker Devin Harper
On getting more reps:
"Whenever I get my chance, I'm going to take a chance at my opportunity."
On the defense's ability to get sacks:
"We've got excellent players - great players who can have great pass rushing and all that. The schemes that [Jim Knowles] comes up with are very helpful. They work to help us out by making plays for ourselves and getting to the next level."
Offensive Lineman Teven Jenkins
On the team's focus:
"We've always got to focus on this week's game. It always comes back to preparation. You can't focus on anything else besides the team you are playing this week."
On the team's attitude last week:
"Everybody came out with a lot of energy. We knew we had to get back to our regular selves. Everybody was getting pumped up and running as hard as they could [in practice]."
Running Back JD King
On his role with the team:
"I just get to play with and behind one of the greatest running backs in the game every time I step on the field."
On Justice Hill as a leader:
"He motivates me, and the rest of the young running backs to try to be as good as him. He has so much character about him. He doesn't just walk the walk, but he talks the talk."
On how his time in the weight room translates to the field:
"If you're strong in the weight room, you are strong on the field. I want to be a good football player, so I do whatever it takes to be a good football player."
Cowboy Back Jelani Woods
On transitioning from quarterback to cowboy back:
"They asked me last year around November if I could switch since I was running tight end for the scout team. They thought it was a potential spot I could fill, so I took it and ran with it."
On what he likes about the position:
"I love everything about it. I get to be on the field a lot and I am loving it. There are no downfalls about it."
Wide Receiver Tylan Wallace
On practice this week:
"We have to step up the intensity a little bit, I know we had a few mistakes offensively and defensively against Kansas. I think we are just trying to fix those up and get ready for the next game."
On OSU's ability to share the ball:
"Our whole team is very talented, just our whole offense. We have a lot of talented players that people don't recognize. Our receiving corps is really talented."
On finding success against Iowa State's defense:
"It's all about us just going out there and executing. They run a lot of trap and I think that is something that we have really got to work on, blocking especially against them."
