October 16, 2018 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
IRVING, TEXAS—The Oklahoma State cross country squads won both of the Big 12 Runner of the Week awards, as Ashenafi Hatte and Sinclaire Johnson were both honored for their performances this week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Both Hatte and Johnson took home victories Saturday at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas. The weekly award marks the first time either athlete has been honored as a Big 12 Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Hatte finished the 8,000-meter race in 23:52.7 as he held hands with fellow Cowboy Isai Rodriguez. It was the second time this season Hatte has broken the 24-minute barrier. The junior also ran a sub-24 minute time at the Nuttycombe Invitational. Hatte's race led the Cowboys to a runner-up finish at the race in Aggieland.
Johnson also was victorious at the Arturo Barrios Invitational. She won the race in 19:58.5 and led the Cowgirls to a second-place finish in the team race. The 6,000-meter performance was Johnson's personal best time and a season-best for OSU this season.
This is the first time this season that an OSU runner was honored as a Big 12 Runner of the Week. It's the first time a Cowgirl has been honored since Ingeborg Loevnes won the award. Loevnes' third-place finish at the Cowboy Jamboree on Sept. 26, 2015, earned her the recognition.
The next test for OSU is the Big 12 Cross Country Championships at 10 a.m. on Oct. 26 in Ames, Iowa.
