Harding, Gfeller Advance to Semis at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Two Oklahoma State Cowboy wrestlers went undefeated on the opening day of the Southern Scuffle on Monday. Cowboys Gary Wayne Harding (133) and freshman Kaden Gfeller (141) will wrestle in the semifinals on Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, redshirt junior Blake Andrews will wrestle in the second round of eight in the heavyweight  consolation bracket.

Wrestling unattached with a bye in the round of 64, Gfeller completed a 20-5 technical fall over Roemer Dallas of Gardner Webb at the conclusion of the first period to open his day. His domination continued into the round of 16 where he defeated Carlos Herrera by fall in 4:25. Penn State's Jered Cortez's medical forfeit advanced Gfeller through the quarterfinals to the semis where he will face of against Luke Karam of Lehigh.

Harding is set to wrestle unattached wrestler Colby Smith in the semifinals. He started the day with a bye in the round of 32, before upsetting fourth-seeded Corey Keener of Penn State in a 7-0 decision to advance to the quarterfinals. Harding defeated fifth-seeded Big 12 opponent Rico Montoya of Northern Colorado 6-2 to advance to the semifinals.

After dropping his first match of the day, 5-2, to Lehigh's Christian Colucci, Andrews fought his way back through the consolation bracket. Beginning with a 5-2 defeat of Matt Wagner of Air Force, he outscored his opponents a combined 35-9 the rest of the way. Andrews scored a 16-1 technical fall over Gardner Webb's Jackson Price and won decisions against Andrew Gunning of North Carolina and CSU-Bakersfield's Mark Penyacsek. He will face Lehigh's Jordan Wood in the fifth round of the consolation bracket to start day two.

Tristan Moran's first action of the day came in the round of 32 where he recorded a fall against NC State's Jake DeAngelo at the 2:47 mark. After dropping an 8-2 decision to Campbell's Josh Heil, Moran notched his second fall of the day in just more than six minutes against Ronnie Perry of Lock Haven. He lost his final match 11-5 in sudden victory to Trevor Elfvin of Drexel.

In his season debut, Hestin Lamons went 1-2 on the day before being eliminated in the second round of consolation matches.

Andrew Marsden was eliminated in round one of the consolation bracket following a second round 10-9 loss to Virginia Tech's Stan Smeltzer.

The Cowboys resume action tomorrow in Chattanooga beginning with the fifth round of consolations at 9 a.m. CT.
