DAVE SMITH - MEET COMMENTS
Â
On traveling to Texas Tech
"I'm excited to see their new facility. They've built what I heard is just an absolutely beautiful track and football facility. It might be one of the best in the country. Talking to the coaches down there, they're excited about it and they say it's an extremely fast track. So I'm thrilled to see another great facility in the Big 12. As far as we're concerned, I think this will be the first meet of the year where we're going to get in some major competition with some really good athletes and some of the best athletes in the country in a top-of-the-line facility. I think big things happen if you have the right attitude in those situations."
Â
On lining up against competition the teams don't normally see
"Yeah, I think that's exciting, especially for our sprint group and our jumpers. LSU is obviously one of the best sprint groups in the country and Texas Tech is one of the best in the conference. Houston has some individual sprinters who are the best in the world. So, for our athletes to get in among the very best and have a chance to line up against them is good. When you raise the bar, people find a way to get over it. When you're around great athletes, you start to expect more out of yourself. I think it's going to be a great opportunity for our athletes to line up against some other really good athletes that we don't normally see."
Â
On racing after a month away from competition
"We've had a month and a month of Christmas break, so who knows where we are. We've had two days of practice and some of the athletes I looked at looked like they did some really good work over the break and some probably not. We'll see. But I'm really excited about the women's middle distance group. They looked, from top to bottom, as good as we've ever looked at this time of year, and we've had some really good groups. The sprint group seems like they're in a really good place and I'm excited to see where they are. We've got some young female sprinters I want to see - Kira White, Nicolette Dixon, Latriciea Smith. There's some new people I'm excited to see competing. They're new in some areas that we haven't had a lot of success in the past, so I'm excited to see."

A Look Back - K-State Winter Invitational
The Oklahoma State indoor track and field teams opened their season on December 8-9 at the Kansas State Winter Invitational, taking first in 10 events on their opening weekend.
OSU competed with Kansas State, Nebraska-Omaha, Fort Hays State and a few athletes from Kennesaw State and Washburn.
Mace Metcalf kicked off the two-day meet with a win in the men's pentathlon, scoring 3,445 points to edge out Derek Bixenman from Fort Hays State.
Freshman Torrey Hickel and redshirt-freshman Zach Andrew showed promise in the throws, with Hickel finishing second in the shot put and Andrew placing second in the weight throw.
Brandon Singleton and Tanner Green went 1-2 in the men's 600-yard run, finishing in 1:13.89 and 1:14.57, respectively.
OSU swept the 600-yard titles with newcomer Latriciea Smith winning the women's race. She finished in 1:25.34 and was followed closely by Chelsea Jarvis, who took second in 1:25.67.
Freshman Ryan Roane took first in two events in the opening meet of the season – the long jump and the triple jump. Roane impressed in the long jump, leaping 5.45m/17-10.75 feet to take the crown, then later jumping 11.45m/37-6.75 feet to earn first in the triple jump as well.
The Cowboy 4x400-meter relay team also had a successful season debut. The men finished first overall in the final event of the meet. The quartet of graduate-transfer Kwame Donyinah, Tanner Green, Brandon Singleton and Calahan Newsome edged out the Wildcats with a time of 3:19.63.
Â
A Year For The Record Books
As the bulk of another indoor season rapidly approaches for Dave Smith's squads, they will be attempting to fill the footsteps left behind by some of OSU's most notable student-athletes.
In the 2016-17 indoor season, senior Kaela Edwards left her mark on the country when she set the NCAA record in the 1,000 meters on a Friday in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Edwards ran the 1,000-meter run in 2:40.79 on the first day of the Holiday Inn Invite. In doing so, she smashed the facility record by about five seconds and her own school record by three seconds.
Not be outdone, the Cowboys had a pair of school records broken in last year's indoor season by senior Josh Thompson and long jumper Jacob Fincham-Dukes.
Thompson broke OSU's 1,000 meter record en route to a Big 12 individual title in the event. His time of 2:22.07 bested former Cowboy Chad Noelle's time from 2014 by four-tenths of a second.
Fincham-Dukes also etched his name in OSU record books last season. His long jump of 7.86m/25-9.5 feet beat the school record by nearly a full foot. His jump took place at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
