One More Ride: Marcell Ateman

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State wide receiver Marcell Ateman has traveled a long and winding road during his time in Stillwater. After an injury during summer workouts derailed what would've been his senior campaign in 2016, Ateman returns to the field this season looking to finish off what has been an excellent OSU career.
Marcell Ateman first arrived in Stillwater prior to the 2013 season after starring at Wylie East High School in Dallas, Texas. The young Cowboy played in every game for Oklahoma State as a freshman and finished fifth on the squad with 22 receptions and 276 receiving yards.
Ateman produced several stand-out moments during his inaugural collegiate season, as he brought down a season-best four catches both on the road against UTSA and in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri. He also hauled in a 51-yard reception that anchored a 99-yard touchdown to put the Cowboys up 7-0 during their upset of the No. 3-ranked Baylor Bears.
The Dallas native continued to play a key role in the Cowboys' receiving corps during the 2014 season, as he played in 12 games and started in seven of those.
Ateman's best day as a sophomore came against Texas Tech when he set career highs with six catches and 130 receiving yards. His next-best performances came against UTSA the week prior when he hauled in four catches for 70 yards and against Iowa State the week after when he secured three passes for 33 yards.
Ateman's breakout campaign came during his junior year in 2015 though, when he played in every game for the Cowboys and started in all but one of those.
That season, he became one of the Cowboys' most explosive big-play threats as he logged 33 catches of at least 10 yards and 11 receptions of at least 20 yards.
Included in Ateman's notable moments from the 2015 season was his career-long 82-yard touchdown catch against TCU. That reception was the longest play of the year for Oklahoma State, and at the time it ranked as the seventh longest receiving play in school history.
The big-bodied receiver also produced a career day in Big 12 action against Iowa State, as he tallied career highs with eight catches and 132 receiving yards. His excellent performances in conference action continued against Kansas State when he hauled in six passes for 101 yards, which included a key grab on 4th and 8 to keep the Cowboy offense on the field for a game-winning field goal in OSU's 36-34 win over the Wildcats.
At the season's end, Ateman concluded his junior campaign as the squad's third-leading receiver with 45 catches and 766 receiving yards. He also finished second among his fellow Cowboys with five receiving touchdowns.
Ateman was forced to sit out the 2016 season due to an injury sustained during summer workouts. This season, however, he will take the field once again as he looks to write the final chapter of his Oklahoma State career.
