STILLWATER – Oklahoma State safety Tre Flowers has come into his own in the Cowboy secondary during his first three seasons in Stillwater. Now, Flowers enters his senior season as one of OSU's defensive anchors in 2017.
Flowers redshirted during his first year in Stillwater in 2013, but immediately became an impact player for the Cowboys in 2014 when he finished as the squad's sixth-leading tackler with 56 tackles, 47 of which were solo stops. He posted a season-best eight tackles against Iowa State and recorded at least five tackles in seven games during his freshman campaign.
In 2015, Flowers started every game at strong safety for Oklahoma State as a sophomore. He once again was prolific at bring down opposing offensive players as he finished with 83 tackles, including 67 solo stops. He also led the team with nine passes defended, while also totaling two interceptions and seven pass breakups.
Flowers had a career day on the road against West Virginia. In Morgantown, he tallied a career-high 13 tackles and was named Oklahoma State's defensive player of the game.
The Converse, Texas native also starred against fifth-ranked TCU as he picked off Trevone Boykin in the third quarter. Flowers added another pass break up and tallied 10 total tackles during the Cowboys' 49-29 victory over the Horned Frogs.
Flowers concluded his sophomore campaign by leading the Cowboys with nine tackles against Ole Miss in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. He recorded at least two tackles in every game during the 2015 season, which included three double-digit tackle performances. The 6-3 safety also was successful in the classroom, as he was named to the Academic All-Big 12 second team at the seasons' end.
Now firmly cemented as a fixture of the OSU secondary, Flowers returned for his junior year in 2016 and once again was a stand-out performer for the Cowboys.
Flowers played in all 13 games in 2016, starting in 12 of those contests. He recorded seven pass break-ups to lead all Cowboys and racked up 61 tackles, including 45 solo stops and two tackles for loss. He was also a part of one of college football's players of the year, and a Piesman Trophy finalist play, as he received a lateral from defensive tackle Vincent Taylor after he blocked and picked up a PAT attempt and took it 70 yards for a two-point PAT return.
At the end of his third year on the field, Flowers was named a second-team All-Big 12 performer by the league's coaches. He also earned Oklahoma State's Barry Sanders Award in 2016, which is given to the player that provides the biggest contribution to the team with the least amount of recognition.
This season, Flowers will once again be a featured performer and a leader in the Oklahoma State secondary. As one of the best returning safeties in the conference, Tre Flowers will have an opportunity to cap off what has been a highly-successful career at OSU.
