July 19, 2017 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The preseason accolades continue to pour in for Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph, who was added Wednesday to the national watch lists for the 2017 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the 2017 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.
Rudolph, a Heisman Trophy candidate, has already been included on the preseason watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Wuerffel Trophy and Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
He is one of 47 quarterbacks on the list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which is presented at the end of each football season to a winner who is selected based on his accomplishments both on and off the field. Candidates must be a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class.
He is one 30 of the nation's top college quarterbacks up for the Davey O'Brien Award. That watch list was selected based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2017 college football season. All nominees are required to have previously started at least one game at their current institution. Rudolph was a semifinalist for that award last year.
Heading into his senior season, Mason Rudolph has played at a level that matches some of Oklahoma State's all-time best quarterbacks. He's been tabbed as the No. 1 senior quarterback in the country by Mel Kiper and as the No. 19 player in college football heading into the 2017 season by Athlon Sports.
Rudolph has quarterbacked OSU to a 22-6 record as a starter and has led the Cowboys to eight victories in games in which they trailed during the second half. He led all FBS quarterbacks returning in 2017 in both interception avoidance and touchdown-to-interception ratio in 2016, and he is already the owner of no fewer than 11 school records.
He is in position to set OSU career records for pass attempts, pass completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns in the 2017 season and has a chance to finish his career as the most efficient passer in Oklahoma State history.
The Golden Arm Award committee will announce the top 15 finalists for the 2017 Golden Arm Award in September. The 30th Anniversary presentation of the Golden Arm Award will be held on Friday, Dec. 8 at the Embassy Suites Baltimore Inner Harbor & Grand.
For the O'Brien Award, 16 semifinalists will be named on Tuesday, Nov. 7. From that list, the Foundation and the selection committee will announce the three finalists on Monday, Nov. 20. The 2017 Davey O'Brien Award winner will be announced live Thursday, Dec. 7, on The Home Depot College Football Awards.
