Sinor Named to Ray Guy Award Watch List
July 12, 2017 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State standout punter Zach Sinor has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2017 Ray Guy Award, the Augusta Sports Council announced Wednesday morning.
Sinor is one of just 29 punters in the country included on the watch list for the award, which annually honors the nation's top collegiate punter. He is also one of five semifinalists from last year to appear on the preseason list for this year.
As a semifinalist for the award last season and a second team All-Big 12 selection, Sinor led all FBS punters with 62.5 percent of his punts being downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line – a figure that was nearly 10 percent better than any other punter in the country.
Despite punting only 56 times on the season, Sinor's 35 punts downed inside the 20 led the nation and, due largely to his ability to target punt with hang time, OSU ranked second nationally by allowing only 15 punt return yards all season.
Sinor's performance was perhaps the most significant reason why the Cowboys ranked No. 1 nationally in opponents' starting field position, starting on average at their own 23.8-yard line. The Cowboys held their opponents to either zero yards or negative yards on punt returns seven times in 13 games during 2016.
The Ray Guy Award committee will select 10 semifinalists in November who will then be announced on Nov. 16. Then a national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for the top three finalists to be announced on Nov. 21. After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select the nation's top punter. The winner will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards airing on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017.
