Stories of Gratitude - James Washington
June 30, 2017 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State wide receiver James Washington came from a town with a population of just 3,124. The Stamford, Texas native saw hiw small-town roots as a source of strength though, and has used the lessons he learned growing up to become one of the most productive players in OSU history.
When Washington began playing football in seventh grade, it was his cousin who inspired him to dedicate himself to the sport. Now, Washington is one of college football's most prolific receivers, but he still wears No. 28 on his jersey because that was the number his cousin wore as well.
"Where I come from, you don't want anybody to give you anything, and my family has instilled that in me since day one," Washington said. "I remember working outside on my birthday instead of having a party like other kids. That's just how things were and I couldn't be more thankful for it. Now that I'm here at Oklahoma State, I've seen the product of my hard work in my success both on and off the field.
"I'm the first person in my family to go to college, but I know that I won't be the last."
