Hendricks Prepares for Homecoming Fight in OKC
June 23, 2017 | Cowboy Wrestling
OKLAHOMA CITY – Former Oklahoma State wrestler and UFC middleweight Johny Hendricks held an open workout and brief media session at Lovato's School of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Friday afternoon, ahead of his Sunday night fight against Tim Boetsch at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Â
"I'm pretty excited about fighting in Oklahoma," Hendricks said. "Words can't really say how excited I am, but I've got to keep that in check. I understand what I need to do. I'm going to enjoy it, but I'm not going to let it dictate how I'm going to fight."
Â
Hendricks (18-6-0) enters Sunday's fight coming off a recent bump up to middleweight (185 pounds) from his previous welterweight status.
Â
"(The transition) has been pretty good," Hendricks said. "I had to re-learn how to cut weight. Also, now that we're building muscle, that plays into it too. It's just fine tuning it. It's been pretty nice, actually. I've been drinking water, eating plenty of food, so I've got to lose a couple of pounds today, but nothing crazy."
Â
The former Cowboy will square off with Boetsch (20-11-0), fighting out of Sunbury, Penn.
Â
"I see a lot of Oklahoma State wrestling t-shirts in the crowd here today," Boetsch said. "They seem like they're smiling at me and being cordial, but I've got a feeling there are a lot of Johny Hendricks fans here."
Â
Fans can watch the fight live on FS1, with coverage beginning at 6 p.m. CT.
