Cowboy Trio Selected On Day Two Of MLB Draft
June 13, 2017 | Cowboy Baseball
SECAUCUS, N.J. – Three Oklahoma State Cowboys were chosen in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft today as Tyler Buffett, Trey Cobb and Garrett McCain were each tabbed as top-10 round picks.
Buffett and Cobb were selected in the MLB Draft for the second-straight year, with both improving their draft status in 2017 after returning to the Cowboys for their senior seasons, while McCain was drafted for the first time.
Buffett was first to hear his name called as he was taken in the sixth round with the 167th overall pick by the Cincinnati Reds. Cobb was chosen with the 247th overall pick in the eighth round by the New York Mets, and McCain was a 10th-round choice (305th pick) of the Detroit Tigers.
A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Buffett completed his four-year OSU career earlier this month and left his name scattered throughout the Cowboy baseball record books as he is tied for second in career appearances (87) and ranks eighth all time with 275 2/3 innings pitched. The righty compiled a 20-12 record and 3.79 ERA as a Cowboy, and his nine saves ranks 10th on the school's all-time list. His win total was just two shy of cracking the top 10, and his 226 career strikeouts also ranked just outside the top 10.
An All-Big 12 First Team selection in 2016 after setting a program record with 37 appearances, Buffett went 9-3 with nine saves and a 2.81 ERA on the season and was a seventh-round pick of Houston last June. However, he was one of only two players selected in the first 10 rounds of last year's draft not to sign a pro contract, and he returned to OSU and led the Cowboys with six wins and 82 strikeouts in 17 appearances (15 starts) during his final collegiate season.
Buffett, along with Cobb, played key roles on four NCAA Tournament teams during their OSU careers and starred on teams that won two Big 12 Conference championships, made a pair of Super Regional appearances and earned a berth in the College World Series for the 20th time in program history.
An instrumental part of OSU's 2016 road to Omaha, Buffett pitched out of the bullpen for much of the season but took on a starting role in the NCAA tourney and was dominant during the Cowboys' run to a third-place finish. He went 3-0 with a 0.78 ERA, allowing just two earned runs and striking out 16 in 23 innings of work, and recorded wins over Clemson (Regional), South Carolina (Super Regional) and Arizona (CWS).
Cobb was a 12th-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs last June but also returned to Stillwater for his senior season in 2017. After four seasons in an OSU uniform (2014-17), he ended his career as the program's career leader in appearances with 92 and compiled a 10-10 record and 2.99 ERA, and his 11 saves are tied for sixth on the Cowboys' all-time list. He also racked up 217 career strikeouts in 201 2/3 innings.
A two-time honorable mention All-Big 12 performer, the right-handed Cobb became one of only 14 pitchers in OSU history to record 100 strikeouts in a season in 2016, and he shined during OSU's run to the College World Series as he recorded an NCAA Tournament-high four saves. In six relief appearances in the '16 NCAA tourney, he turned in a 0.64 ERA, allowing only one earned run in 14 innings and recording 15 strikeouts.
Cobb missed the first seven weeks of the '17 season recovering from a broken bone in his elbow but returned to action on April 1 and went on to make 19 relief appearances. He tied for the team lead with three saves and posted a 1-1 record and 3.38 ERA to go along with 36 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings of work.
McCain had a breakout junior season for the Cowboys in 2017 en route to All-America and All-Big 12 First Team honors. The outfielder leads the Big 12 with a .388 batting average and is poised to become the first OSU player to lead the conference in hitting since 2008 and just the fourth all time.
A native of Wylie, Texas, McCain also leads the Big 12 in hits (87) and on-base percentage (.491) and ranks in the top five in the league in steals (19), total bases (123), runs (53), slugging percentage (.549) and triples (5). He was one of only two OSU players to start all 57 games in 2017, and he led the Pokes in 11 offensive categories.
In three seasons and 130 games at OSU, McCain owns a .338 batting average to go along with 20 doubles and 62 RBIs, and he is 37-of-40 on stolen base attempts.
The 2017 MLB Draft concludes Wednesday with rounds 11-40, with the first selection scheduled for 11 a.m.
