STILLWATER, Okla. – Four members of Oklahoma State's men's golf team advance through the local qualifying stage for the U.S. Open at two different sites on Tuesday.
Five Cowboys were among those in the field competing for five spots in Norman, Okla., at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club with sophomore Hayden Wood and senior Zachary Olsen sharing medalist honors after firing matching 6-under 66s.
Wood made the turn at even-par 36 after canceling a bogey at the first with a birdie at the sixth hole. He then blistered his inward nine with a 6-under 30 that included birdies at Nos. 10, 11, 13, 14, 17 and 18.
Olsen posted a 3-under 33 on his outward nine with four birdies against one bogey. He then turned in a bogey-free back nine with birdies at Nos. 13, 16 and 18.
Juniors Brendon Jelley and Kristoffer Ventura finished the day in a four-way tie for the fifth and final spot after carding even-par rounds of 72. Jelley would eventually prevail to advance, giving OSU three of the site's five sectional qualifiers.
Junior Sam Stevens was also in the field, tying for 46th place.
Sophomore Zach Bauchou advanced through local qualifying in Hot Springs, Ark., grabbing one of five spots at Hot Springs Country Club's Arlington Course after carding a 68.
Additionally, freshman Viktor Hovland was exempt from local qualifying and will take part in sectional qualifying, which will be held between May 22 and June 5.
Tuesday also saw Cowboy freshman-to-be Austin Eckroat close out his prep career with his second career Oklahoma Class 6A state title. Eckroat carded rounds of 66, 68 and 70 for a two-stroke victory at the Golf Club of Edmond while helping Edmond North to its 12th state title in the last 13 years.
