IRVING, Texas – For the second consecutive year, Oklahoma State had a program-record nine student-athletes named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, and 14 Cowboys total earned Academic All-Big 12 accolades.
Â
OSU's nine first-team selections led the Big 12, while the 14 honorees was just one shy of last year's program-record total.
Â
Highlighting the Cowboys' honorees are a pair of pitchers. Senior Tyler Buffett earned Academic All-Big 12 status for the third time in his career and was named to the first team for the first time, while junior Matt Wilson also picked up first-team honors and was one of two student-athletes in the conference nominated with a 4.00 grade point average. Both Buffett and Wilson earned degrees last week from OSU, Buffett in management and marketing and Wilson in finance and accounting.
Â
Joining that duo on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team were Cowboy seniors Trey Cobb and Dustin Williams, juniors Garrett Benge, Jake Cowan, Jon Littell and Garrett McCain and sophomore Joe Lienhard. Williams and McCain earned first-team honors for the second-straight year, while Littell is now a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, having earned second-team honors in 2016.
Â
Earning spots on the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team from OSU were senior Ryan Sluder, who picked up that honor for the second-straight year, along with juniors Blake Battenfield, Jacob Chappell and Andrew Rosa and sophomore Carson Teel. Rosa was a first-team selection in 2016, while Chappell and Teel were each named to the second team for the second consecutive year.
Â
The 2017 Academic All-Big 12 Teams consist of 87 student-athletes, with 52 of those on the first team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Â
To qualify for Academic All-Big 12 honors, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
