STILLWATER – Oklahoma State dropped a second-straight one-run game to Baylor Sunday as the Bears handed the Cowboys an 8-7 loss on Senior Day at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Â
OSU's fifth loss in a row dropped the Cowboys to 24-24 overall and 6-14 in Big 12 Conference play. Baylor is now 32-17 and 11-10 in the league.
Â
For the second consecutive day, the Pokes brought the winning run to the plate — doing so twice on Sunday — but couldn't plate a run against BU closer Troy Montemayor, who recorded his 12th save of the season.
Â
Senior Ryan Sluder had a memorable final home game as he tied a career high with four hits, while Garrett McCain went 2-for-4 to bring his Big 12-best batting average to .392 and Garrett Benge collected two hits and three RBIs.
Â
Senior relief pitcher Trey Cobb also made history in his final game at Reynolds Stadium as his appearance was the 87th of his career, which ties OSU's career mark. Cobb is now atop the list alongside Rob Gaiko (1992-95) and Rob Linfante (1991-94).
Â
OSU took a 2-1 lead in its first at bat, tying the game on a solo homer from Benge — his team-leading ninth of the season — and going on top compliments of a two-out RBI single off the bat of Sluder.
Â
The Bears would go back on top by plating two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings against OSU starter Blake Battenfield as the visitors took a 5-2 advantage.
Â
OSU answered with a two-run rally of its own in the bottom of the fifth when an error by BU second baseman Josh Bissonette brought home two runs and made the score 5-4.
Â
The Cowboys would regain the lead in the sixth. With two outs, McCain delivered an RBI single up the middle to tie the score, and Benge followed with a two-RBI hit to make it 7-5.
Â
But the Bears would erase that lead in the eighth with three runs on four hits. Following back-to-back singles off OSU reliever Carson Teel to open the inning, the Pokes recorded the first out at third on a failed sacrifice bunt. However, consecutive RBI singles by Bissonette and Tucker Cascadden knotted the score again at 7-7.
Â
OSU called on Jonathan Heasley out of the bullpen, but he issued two-straight walks, the second of which brought in the go-ahead run.
Â
Trying to answer in the bottom of the frame, Colin Simpson drew a leadoff walk and pinch runner Andrew Rosa advanced to second with no outs on a wild pitch. But a strikeout, groundout and another strikeout ended the inning as Rosa was stranded at third.
Â
The ninth saw OSU draw another leadoff walk as Benge picked up the free pass. After Jon Littell grounded into a double play, Sluder singled, but Dustin Williams grounded out to end the game.
Â
Teel took the loss for the Cowboys to fall to 4-4, while BU reliever Drew Robertson moved to 2-0 with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Â
OSU returns to action Tuesday at Oral Roberts before concluding the regular season with the Bedlam Series, which opens Thursday night in Tulsa before shifting to Oklahoma City for the final two games on Friday and Saturday.
