STILLWATER – Oklahoma State opened its series against Kansas State with a 10-4 loss to the Wildcats Friday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Â
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 17-12 overall and 1-6 in Big 12 Conference play, while K-State recorded its first conference win and moved to 16-13 and 1-6 in the league.
Â
OSU used seven different pitchers in the game and while they combined for 13 strikeouts, they also issued 11 walks and hit four batters.
Â
Offensively, Colin Simpson continued to swing a hot bat for the Cowboys as he went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs, including mashing his fifth home run of the season. Garrett McCain and Michael Neustifter also had two hits apiece for OSU.
Â
Jonathan Heasley took the loss on the mound to fall to 2-3 as the freshman righty made his first Friday start and allowed two runs on a hit and two walks in his only inning of work.
Â
After KSU took a 2-0 lead in its first at bat on sacrifice flies by Jake Scudder and Hanz Harker, the Cowboys mounted a comeback in the bottom of the inning.
Â
Cameron Dobbs led off the frame with a single, and McCain followed with a double to put Cowboys on second and third with not outs. But OSU managed just one run, that coming on a sacrifice fly by Simpson, to cut its deficit to 2-1.
Â
The Wildcats posted a big blow in the second inning when Scudder delivered an opposite-field grand slam to left field off OSU reliever Carson Teel to push their lead to 6-1.
Â
OSU continued to trail by five until the sixth when Simpson followed a triple by Garrett Benge with a two-run home run down the right-field line to cut the Wildcats' advantage to 6-3. The blast marked the third-straight Big 12 game in which Simpson has homered.
Â
That was as close as the Cowboys would get, however, as K-State scored in each of the final three innings, plating four runs in all, to seal the win.
Â
The two teams return to action Saturday at 3 p.m.
