STILLWATER – Oklahoma State got back in the Big 12 win column Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium as the Cowboys routed Kansas State, 13-3, to even the series.
The win snapped OSU's three-game losing streak in conference play as OSU improved to 2-6 in the Big 12 and 18-12 overall. The Wildcats are 16-14 and 1-7 in the league heading into Sunday's series rubber game, which is set for a noon first pitch.
Colin Simpson continued to feast on opposing pitchers Saturday, homering for the second consecutive game and going 4-for-4 with four RBIs at the plate while finishing just a triple shy of the cycle.
Cameron Dobbs (3-for-5, two RBIs), Cade Cabbiness (2-for-5, RBI) and Garrett McCain (1-for-3, two RBIs) also had big days at the plate as the Cowboys racked up 14 hits in the contest.
The offensive outburst, highlighted by a six-run seventh inning, helped Tyler Buffett improve to 5-2 on the season. The senior right-hander worked 6 1/3 innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing three runs while striking out four.
Three of KSU's hits came in the first inning as the visitors took a 1-0 lead. But the Cowboys answered in the bottom of the frame, getting an RBI double by Garrett Benge and a run scoring single by Simpson to take a lead they never surrendered.
OSU scored in each of its first four at bats, getting solo homers from Rosa and Simpson in the second and third innings before RBI hits from Dobbs and McCain pushed the Pokes' lead to 6-2 after four.
In the seventh, with OSU leading 7-2, K-State loaded the bases with one out against Buffett following two singles and a walk. Cole Hearrean came out of the bullpen and uncorked a wild pitch for the Wildcats' third run, but he then struck out Jake Scudder before Joe Lienhard took the mound with the bases again full and induced an inning-ending flyout to keep the score at 7-3.
The bottom of the inning saw the Cowboys put the game away with six runs on four hits as Cabbiness, Dobbs, McCain and Simpson each collected RBIs.
