Middle Of Order Fuels Cowboys’ Win At #4 Texas Tech
April 22, 2017 | Cowboy Baseball
With the win, OSU improved to 22-15 overall and 5-8 in Big 12 Conference play; Texas Tech fell to 32-9 and 8-5 in the league.
The 3-4-5 hitters in the Cowboys' lineup – Garrett Benge, Garrett McCain and Colin Simpson – combined for eight of OSU's 10 hits and drove in 11 runs. McCain finished with a career-high five RBIs, while Simpson tied his previous career best of four set against Kansas State earlier this season.
Carson Teel earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to improve to 3-3, while Trey Cobb kept the Red Raiders off the scoreboard and struck out four over the final two frames to earn his second save.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when McCain followed a walk to Ryan Cash and a single by Garrett Benge with a three-run home run to left field, a blast that marked the fourth round tripper of the season for the Big 12's leading hitter.
The 3-0 lead held until the third when the Red Raiders plated a pair of runs off OSU starter Joe Lienhard, and in the fifth, the home team would tie the score on a sacrifice fly by Michael Berglund.
The sixth inning proved pivotal as OSU rallied for six runs in the top of the frame to seize momentum. With one out and the bases loaded after a hit by pitch, error and walk, Benge brought home the go-ahead run with an RBI walk. Up next, McCain delivered a two-RBI double to right field to add to the Cowboys' lead and give him a career-high five RBIs on the night.
The Pokes weren't done as Simpson followed McCain with OSU's second homer of the night, a three-run job over the wall in right-center field to push the lead to 9-3. The blast was Simpson's team-leading ninth of the season, with seven of those coming in conference play.
The six-run lead did not last long, however, as TTU answered with a big inning of its own in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs on six hits to tie the score at 9-9. Lienhard opened the inning on the hill but following a two-run home run by John McMillon, his night was done.
Jake Cowan came in and surrendered four runs, just two of them earned, on three hits in 2/3 of an inning before Teel came in and finally got the Cowboys out of the inning after allowing an RBI single that tied the score.
OSU would rally for three runs over the final two innings to secure the win.
In the eighth, the Cowboys took the lead for good when, with two outs, Simpson brought home Benge with the go-ahead run on an RBI single. Benge had doubled earlier in the inning and advanced to third on a passed ball.
OSU tallied a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. Pinch hitter Trevor Boone led off the inning with a double and later scored when Ryan Sluder picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice. The Cowboys extended their lead to 12-9 on a two-out RBI single by Benge.
Cobb surrendered a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth but struck out the side to finish off the Red Raiders.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 2 p.m.
