STILLWATER – Jacob Fincham-Dukes broke the eight-meter mark in the long jump with a wind-aided leap of 8.02m/26-3.75 feet at the Horned Frog Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas, while Ieva Zarankaite turned heads at the Mt. SAC Relays out west with her performance in the discus throw.
Down at the Horned Frog Invitational, Fincham-Dukes finished fifth in the long jump with his mark of more than 26 feet. Although not wind-legal, Fincham-Dukes holds one of the best marks in the conference and in the west region.
"There were eight guys in this event and six of them jumped over 26 feet," jumps coach Zivile Pukstiene said. "He showed that he belonged in this competition and he reached his goal of eight meters, even if it was windy today."
The Leeds, England, native also ran in the 100-meter dash and recorded a time of 10.56 seconds (+1.9) to claim the best time by a Cowboy this year.
"He's gotten much faster this year and that's evident in his time and the way he approached his series today," Pukstiene said. "Last year, he was an 11.1 guy, so he's had to change his steps and he even changed where he started today on one of his jumps."
Zarankaite made it two-straight weekends of runner-up finishes in the discus when she took second via tiebreak at the Mt. SAC Relays with a near-personal best heave of 54.40m/178-5.0 feet.
She's back in the top-10 of the West Region in the event and holds her No. 3 spot in the conference behind two other athletes with the some of the best marks in the country. The Big 12 has the most marks in the top-10 in the women's discus with three, ahead of the Big Ten and SEC tied with two.
Junior Ambra Wesley finished fifth with a time of 55.55 in the women's 400 and overtook Savannah Camacho for the best time by a Cowgirl this season.
"It was Ambra's first 400 in a while and she opened with a PR in less than ideal conditions," sprints coach Giles McDonnell said.
Tyler Jackson put up a solid time of 47.54 in the quarter-mile, breaking into the conference's top-10 and into the top-60 in the West Region.
"Tyler and Ambra competed well and it's not an easy task to run into the kind of wind there was on the backstretch," McDonnell said. "Tyler faded a little in the last 100, but it shows how close he is to running great times."
Newcomers Temitope Olonisakin and Logan Daily both grabbed personal bests in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 11th and 12th, respectively.
"They're getting close to times that could qualify them for the regional," McDonnell said. "Temi has had an issue with his hamstrings, so it's the best he's run in three years or so. Logan didn't run fast until last May, so this has been an adjustment period for him."
Next week, the Pokes return to the Golden State, this time for the Cardinal Classic in Palo Alto, and head to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the John McDonnell Invitational.
