Cowboys Fourth After Day One At Southern Highlands

LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma State's men's golf team opened play at the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Monday with a 286 tally to stand alone in fourth place at Southern Highlands Golf Club.
The Cowboys' 2-under score put them four shots out of third place, which was held by Pepperdine, and five shots behind Stanford for second place. Southern California posted a 10-under 278 to lead by three at the par-72, 7,374-yard layout.
California's Collin Morikawa grabbed the individual lead, firing a 6-under 66 to come in one shot clear of the field.
OSU sophomore Hayden Wood found his way into the top five, sharing the fifth spot with USC's Cheng Jin after carding a 3-under 69. Wood began his day with a birdie at the first before moving back to level par with a bogey at the second.
After sandwiching a bogey at the fifth with birdies at Nos. 4 and 6, he turned in 1-under 35. Wood put together a bogey-free inward nine that included birdies at the 12th and 17th for a 2-under 34.
Zachary Olsen continued his solid play of late, finishing with a 71 to come in tied for 12th place. The senior's 1-under score marked the fifth time in his last six rounds he has been under par.
Junior Kristoffer Ventura finished the day tied for 29th place after signing for a 73. Ventura was joined at 1-over by sophomore teammate Zach Bauchou.
Freshman Viktor Hovland rounded out the starting five with a 79 to stand in a tie for 71st place.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 9:50 a.m. (PST) and will be grouped with UNLV and SMU.
