Evans, Carroll, Forte Earn All-Big 12 Hoops Honors
March 05, 2017 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State point guard Jawun Evans was named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while guards Jeffrey Carroll and Phil Forte earned second team and honorable mention honors, respectively, the league announced on Sunday.
This marks the first time since 2014 in which the Cowboys had three players named all-conference, and OSU joins Kansas, Baylor and Iowa State as the only teams with three selections.
Oklahoma State was picked to finish seventh in Brad Underwood's first season at the helm, and the Cowboys defied the odds to finish fifth at 9-9 in league play. The will open play at the 2017 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship against Iowa State in the quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Evans finished the regular season with the Big 12 lead in assists per game at 6.3 per contest. He also ranks second in scoring (18.7 ppg) and fourth in steals (1.9 spg). The sophomore is one of four power conference players to average at least 16 points and six assists per game in conference play, and KenPom ranks him sixth in their national player of the year standings.
Evans posted 22 points and a career-high 15 assists against Kansas on Saturday, which are tied for the second-most assists by a Division I player this season and are the most by any OSU player since Doug Gottlieb in 1999. He is the first player this season, and just the sixth Division I player in the last six seasons to post a 20-point, 15-assist game.
Carroll is regarded as one of the nation's most improved players, and joins Baylor's Jonathan Motley as the only Big 12 players averaging at least 17 points and six rebounds per game this year. The Big 12's fourth leading scorer at 17.3 per game, Carroll has the highest field goal percentage of any guard in the conference (53.8 percent) and his 3-point percentage of 43.8 ranks third in the league.
The redshirt-junior has 14 20-point performances in 2016-17, including Saturday's career-high 27-point outing against Kansas.
Forte is the Oklahoma State career 3-point king with 326 makes to his credit, which is just six behind Clarence Gilbert (Missouri, 1998-02) for fifth in Big 12 history. His 1,722 career points rank sixth in school history, and his 133 games in a Cowboy uniform have been topped by just five players.
The senior has 24 career 20-point performances, and his career free-throw percentage of 88.2 ranks second in OSU history. This season, Forte leads the nation with a clip of 95.2 percent from the stripe.
