Madi Sue Montgomery Home Run Difference In Series Clinching Win Over Texas
March 25, 2017 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER, Okla. ---- Oklahoma State Softball's Madi Sue Montgomery's two-run home run Saturday was the difference in a 2-1 win over Texas at Cowgirl Stadium. With the win, the Cowgirls clinch the three-game series against UT for the first time since 2013.
Senior Shea Coats (4-4) went the distance in the circle. She allowed three hits and a run against the Longhorns. Coats has won three of her last four starts. She also became the first Cowgirl pitcher this year to retire all seven leadoff batters.
"We can beat you different ways," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "We can beat you with the long ball. We can short-game you. We can run. We can pitch well. This team just plays hard. They love each other, and it's starting to be fun to watch."
With the win, the Cowgirls improved to 2-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since 2010 and find themselves 10 games above .500 on the year at 21-11.
Oklahoma State mustered just one hit in the game but it was a timely one from Montgomery. In the bottom of the second with two outs and Kristin Reasnor on first, Montgomery blasted a home run off the right field light pole to give the Cowgirls the 2-0 lead they wouldn't give up.
Texas (17-13, 0-2) attempted a comeback effort in the top of the fourth with a solo shot to right field to cut the Cowgirl deficit to 2-1 but it wouldn't be enough as Coats held the Longhorns scoreless the final three innings.
Coats set down the first five batters of the game, which took the OSU streak to 19-straight Longhorn batters set down between the first two games.
Montgomery led the way at the play offensively for OSU going 1-for-2 with two RBIs on her first home run of the year.
"I was really just trying to see the ball and hit the ball," Montgomery said. "I haven't been hitting like I want to, so I was just trying to hit the ball hard and I got ahold of one finally."
