STILLWATER – Oklahoma State recorded its first three-game series win of the season Sunday as the 11th-ranked Cowboys knocked off Texas State, 6-3, at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Â
The win marked the 900th in Reynolds Stadium history. The Cowboys are now 900-216 (.806) at their current home, which is in its 37th season after opening on April 4, 1981.
Â
Garrett Benge led the Cowboys at the plate as the junior third baseman went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Garrett McCain and Ryan Sluder also had strong days at the top of the lineup to set the table for Benge.
Â
Jake Cowan picked up his first-career win on the mound as the junior right-hander was outstanding in four innings of relief, while freshman righty Jonathan Heasley earned the first save of his career to seal the win.
Â
OSU (4-3) fell behind early as the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in their first at bat, but the Cowboys quickly answered in the bottom of the first.
Â
After back-to-back singles by McCain and Sluder, Benge brought home the tying run with a single through the right side. Up next, Colin Simpson grounded into a double play, but Sluder raced home with the go-ahead run to put OSU up, 2-1.
Â
The lead didn't last long, however, as the Bobcats (3-5) tallied two more runs off OSU starter Carson Teel in the second inning, getting a solo home run from Zacri Sanders and an RBI single by Jared Huber to put them up 3-2.
Â
OSU tied the game in the third on an RBI groundout by Simpson and then watched as Cowan dominated the Texas State lineup.
Â
Cowan came on to open the fourth and retired the first nine batters he faced. He did not allow a hit over four shutout frames while striking out a career-high six; the lone runner to reach against him came on a walk.
Â
The Cowboys took a lead they would never surrender in the fifth. McCain walked to lead off the frame, and Sluder then reached on a hit by pitch. After a double steal moved both into scoring position, Benge brought them home with a two-RBI single to left-center field.
Â
OSU plated the game's final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Sluder.
Â
Following Cowan's gem, Cole Hearrean continued the impressive start to his OSU career in a scoreless eighth inning in which he struck out a pair.
Â
Heasley came on in the ninth and gave up a leadoff single before a one-out hit by pitch brought the tying run to the plate. But the righty worked out of the jam, retiring the next two batters on a fly out and groundout to end the game.
Â
OSU returns to action Wednesday when the Cowboys host Saint Louis at 4 p.m. at Reynolds Stadium.
