Cowboys Drop 10-7 Game To Saint Louis
March 01, 2017 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State closed out a four-game homestand Wednesday with a 10-7 loss to Saint Louis at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the loss, the 14th-ranked Cowboys fell to 4-4 on the season, while Saint Louis improved to 7-1.
OSU used 10 different pitchers in the contest, with Blake Battenfield starting on the hill, and the group combined to surrender 18 hits. Only two Cowboy hurlers — Jake Cowan and Jonathan Heasley — tossed more than one inning, with both of those working 1 2/3 frames.
Matt Wilson took the loss, giving up a pair of runs on six hits to fall to 0-1 on the season.
Offensively, the Cowboys collected nine hits and left 10 runners stranded on base. Garrett Benge continued to lead OSU with the bat, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while Garrett McCain was 2-for-2 with two walks and scored three runs.
OSU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in its first at bat despite not recording a hit as four walks and a hit by pitch plated McCain and Ryan Sluder.
In the second, Benge made it 4-0 with a two-RBI triple as he lifted a high fly ball to right-center field that the SLU outfielders lost in the sun, allowing it to drop safely for a hit.
The Cowboys' lead held until the fourth when the Billikens rallied for five runs on six hits against OSU right-handers Trey Riley and Joe Lienhard.
In the bottom of the inning, OSU loaded the bases with no outs but was only able manage one run, that coming when McCain scored on a double play groundout.
Tied 5-5 after four, both teams plated runs in the fifth to remain knotted, but in the sixth, the visitors put up two runs to take a lead they would never surrender.
The Cowboys cut their deficit to 8-7 on an RBI single by pinch hitter Colin Simpson in the sixth, but SLU would plate a pair of insurance runs in the eighth while keeping OSU off the scoreboard over the final three innings to secure the win.
OSU returns to action Friday when they open play at the Frisco College Baseball Classic against Nebraska in Frisco, Texas. Friday's first pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
