Cowboys Drop Series At Grand Canyon
February 20, 2017 | Cowboy Baseball
PHOENIX – Oklahoma State couldn't capitalize offensively Monday at Brazell Stadium as the 11th-ranked Cowboys fell in the series finale to Grand Canyon, 4-0, and dropped the series to the Lopes.
Â
OSU (1-2) stranded nine runners on the basepaths in the contest, and sophomore Carson Teel, making his first-career start, took the loss on the mound.
Â
The Cowboys threatened to take an early lead in the contest. In the second inning, Michael Neustifter collected a one-out double for his first-career hit, and following a walk and an error, OSU had the bases loaded. But Trevor Boone struck out, and Jacob Chappell grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
Â
After retiring the first six hitters he faced, Teel surrendered a leadoff home run to Greg Saez in the bottom of the third as the Lopes took a 1-0 advantage.
Â
In the fourth, OSU was poised to get the tying run with Andrew Rosa on third and one out. But Rosa was thrown out at home on a ground ball to third base before Chappell lined out to end the frame.
Â
GCU (2-1) plated a pair of runs in the fifth, getting an RBI double off the bat of Griffin Barnes before a throwing error allowed the Lopes to push their lead to 3-0.
Â
The final run of the contest came in the sixth on another solo homer, this one by Ian Evans.
Â
OSU mounted a rally in the seventh, getting a leadoff single from Rosa and a double by Boone – his first hit as a Cowboy – to put runners on second and third with no outs. But GCU reliever Gabe Benavides retired the next three batters to keep the Pokes off the scoreboard.
Â
Rosa was the lone Cowboy with multiple hits on the day, as he recorded his second-straight two-hit effort. OSU finished with seven hits in the contest.
Â
Following Teel's 5 1/3 innings on the hill, in which he allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out four, Joe Lienhard and Brady Basso both worked 1 1/3 scoreless frames.
Â
OSU concludes its trip to Phoenix Tuesday when the Cowboys take on Arizona State at 2 p.m. (CST).
