Track and Field Wraps Up Competition in Fayetteville
February 17, 2017 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Oklahoma State Cowgirl track and field team closed the indoor regular season at the Arkansas Qualifier with Kaylee Dodd winning the women's 800-meter run in the fourth-best time in school history.
Dodd's 2:04.68 in the 800-meter run put the Cowgirl into the top-16 in the NCAA on one of the last days of NCAA indoor qualification.
"I think I should make all of my women rabbits in races," coach Dave Smith said. "She was supposed to go out and pace the race, then was looking strong halfway through, so we told her to keep going and she put up a lifetime best."
The time was a personal best by more than a second and puts the England international at the No. 4 spot in school history only behind All-American Savannah Camacho and NCAA champions Nataljia Piliusina and Kaela Edwards. Dodd's mark moves her to third in the Big 12 in the event and is currently the 14th-best time in the NCAA.
"It's a bubble time right now," Smith said. "But she and the rest of the women have the chance to run faster at the conference meet. Had it been maybe a half-second faster, she's likely in, but it's up in the air right now."
Dodd has scored three times at conference championships in the 800-meter run, including a third-place finish at the Big 12 Championships in 2015.
Freshman Alec Haines ran a four-second personal best in the men's mile and finished fifth in 4:07.65. The time is the 10th-fastest in the Big 12 this year and gives the Cowboys four of the 10 fastest times in the conference going into the Big 12 Championships where the Cowboys have won the mile in three-straight seasons.
"We've got everyone running about where they need to be right now," Smith said. "The women are missing maybe two pieces that need to get their mojo back, but they're really good athletes and they'll bounce back. A couple weeks ago, Kaylee was in the same boat and tonight she ran a lifetime best, so I'm confident they'll come around."
The Cowgirls went one-two in the second heat of the 400-meter dash with Amira Coleman running a personal best 56.23, and Ambra Wesley finishing just behind the Cowgirl sophomore in 56.29. The two times were the best marks recorded by Cowgirls this season in the 400.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Emily Hart finished sixth in the third-fastest time in OSU history. Her 8.84 was one-hundredth of a second off from the No. 2 time in school history.
Stephanie Ferrante, Coleman, Camacho and Wesley made up a Cowgirl 4X400-meter relay team that led wire-to-wire to finish the first heat of the event in 3:43.49. The time was good enough for third overall behind host Arkansas and an unattached team.
"The women in the 4X4 really ran well," Smith said. "We had three 55-second legs which are some of the fastest times we've had in a while and I think the team is really coming together in time for the championships."
The Cowboys will put a bow on the indoor regular season Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Indiana, looking to best their distance medley relay time from earlier in the season and secure a spot in the NCAA Championships in the event for the fifth-straight year.
