February 15, 2017 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
IRVING, Texas – For the second time in 2017, Oklahoma State's Kaela Edwards has been named as the Big 12's Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
Edwards earned the honor for her NCAA-leading performance at the historic Millrose Games this past weekend. She was the highest finishing collegiate athlete among a field of mostly Olympians and professional runners in the Women's Wanamaker Mile.
The Cowgirl senior finished the race in 4:28.75, the No. 7 women's mile time in collegiate history and a new OSU record.
Her previous Big 12 AOTW honor came back in January when she set the collegiate 1,000-meter record of 2:40.79.
The defending NCAA mile champion was recently added to the Bowerman Award watch list and is one of only 12 women in the world this year to finish the mile in under 4:30. She is ninth in the world in that event.
Edwards will not race this weekend but is expected to compete at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in two weeks where she is the two-time defending 1,000-meter champion and the conference's defending mile champion.
