STILLWATER — With a record-breaking 2016-17 indoor season, Oklahoma State looks to keep the high expectations and momentum heading into the approaching indoor season.
Second-year throws and multi-events coach Josh Langley said he expects big things from the newcomers and transfers competing in OSU orange for the first time.
"As these events continue to grow in depth and talent, so do our expectations," Langley said. "It's been a fun fall with so many new faces in this group, but it has been one of the more productive falls I've been a part of as well.
"I think that is due in large part to the attitude of the leaders. There has been a big shift in the daily expectations and ownership within the group. As a coach, that's something you love to see."
On the men's side, Blake Scott is a mid-year transfer from Texas who is expected to make an impact in the pole vault. The Aledo, Texas native finished seventh at the 2016 Big 12 Indoor Championships in the vault, earning him All-Big 12 honors with a clearance of 5.19m.
Another transfer for the Cowboys, Mace Metcalf came to OSU from Cowley County Community College in Kansas. His specialty in multi-events and pole vault will bring added depth to an already talented OSU multi-event crew.
Metcalf started off the 2017-18 indoor season on a high note, winning the 2017 Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon, finishing in the top-three in four of five events.
"Mace has been a fantastic addition to the group overall," Langley said. "He's a true leader with proven success at the junior college level. We look forward to translating that to the Big 12 and eventually the NCAA level. He's a lifelong Cowboy who bleeds orange, and this team and university matter to him."
In the men's throws, redshirt-freshman Torrey Hickel will make an impact for the Cowboys in the shot put, while also expected to compete in the weight throw. In his first meet this season, Hickel threw the shot 15.78m, finishing second at the K-State Winter Invitational.
Allie Stern shows promise for the Cowgirl pole vault squad. Stern was the Ohio state champion in the pole vault last year, while still being relatively new to the event. She has a PR of 13'3", which will put her in contention for All-Big 12 honors.
"Just being here this fall, you can see that her presence has elevated the level of practice in the group," Langley said. "She is as driven an athlete as I have ever coached, so when the technique catches up with her drive, we look forward to seeing what she achieves."
Also for the women, Natalie Manders is a transfer from the University of Minnesota. Manders will make her OSU debut in the indoor season with the shot put, but is expected to make her impact in her main outdoor event, the discus.
"As far as performance goes, we want to continue to develop the throws," Langley said. "We have a strong but short history in those events with Nick Miller and Chase Ealey. "We want to make those alumni proud of what they started.
"We are branching out and adding pole vaulters and multi-events to help round out our team. Those are areas we haven't scored points in for a long time, or ever. We are going to change that."
