Washington a Semifinalist for Earl Campbell Award
November 22, 2017 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State wide receiver James Washington is a semifinalist for the 2017 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, it was announced today on the Dave Campbell Texas Football show.
A unanimous preseason and midseason All-America selection in 2017, Washington is one of 10 semifinalists still in the running for the Earl Campbell Award. The standout receiver was also named a finalist for the 2017 Biletnikoff Award earlier this week and is the favorite to bring home that prestigious award at the season's end.
Washington is the Cowboys' top target at wide receiver, and he leads the nation in several statistical categories this season.
His 37 career receiving touchdowns are the highest total among all active FBS players and are five in front of second place. He also leads all active players with 4,240 career receiving yards - nearly 1,000 in front of the next best - and leads all Power Five players with 19.9 yards per catch in his career (minimum 100 career receptions).
This season, Washington leads the country with 119.7 receiving yards per game, despite sitting out the fourth quarter in four blowout wins. He has compiled 1,317 total receiving yards through 11 games, making him one of only three players in Big 12 history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in three different seasons. He joins OSU's Rashaun Woods and Oklahoma's Ryan Broyles as the only players in league history to accomplish that feat.
"James Washington opens up so many things for the Oklahoma State offense because he commands so much attention from opposing defenses, yet he still leads the nation in receiving yards per game. Everyone knows he's the guy and they're all geared up to stop him, yet he still excels. That speaks to his level of greatness," said ESPN analyst and Heisman Trophy-winning receiving Desmond Howard.
Washington's strong 2017 campaign has continued to build upon a multi-year run as one of college football's top wide receivers. His 4,240 career receiving yards make him one of just 21 players in NCAA history to surpass 4,000 career receiving yards.
With a strong finish to the season, Washington could finish as both the Big 12's and Oklahoma State's career receiving yards leader. He enters this week's game against Kansas 346 yards shy of the Big 12's all-time record and 174 yards shy of the OSU record with two games still to be played.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is presented annually to college football's Offensive Player of the Year that was either born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year university.
A Big 12 athlete has won the Earl Campbell Award three out of the four years it has been awarded. However, no one from a college outside of Texas has won the award in its brief existence.
