Cowgirls Take Down Top Ranked Aggies

STILLWATER – The No. 5 Oklahoma State equestrian team upset No. 2 Texas A&M, 10-8, Sunday afternoon at Totusek Arena.
It all came down to Reining in the close matchup. The Cowgirls (3-2, 2-0) led 7-6 over the Aggies (6-2, 2-1) heading into the final event, and the Cowgirls delivered in the clutch. Stephanie Helsen, Hannah Mitchell and Julia Purus earned the points for the Cowgirls with Mitchell getting the deciding point when the Cowgirls were leading 9-8.
Julia Purus earned MOP honors for the Cowgirls with her 70.5-69.5 win over Kalee McCann. It was her second MOP honor of the season with her previous honor coming at SMU.
The Cowgirls got off to a great start in Equitation over Fences. They took the event, 4-1, behind some impressive scores. Carly Barrick, Abigail Brayman, Hannah Janson and Katie Schell earned points for the Cowgirls. Janson earned her first MOP honor of the year with her 85-78 win over A&M's Rachael Hake.
The two teams moved to Horsemanship and it was close throughout the event. Texas A&M took the event, 2-1, but there were also two ties in the event. Maddie Bender got the lone point for the Cowgirls with her 73-71 win over Sarah Orsak.
The meet remained close in Equitation on the Flat, but the Aggies took the event, 3-2. Janson got her second win of the day, and Kendall Pedigo got the other point for the Cowgirls.
"There were several outstanding rides today," head coach Larry Sanchez Said. "We are proud of our team and look forward to continuing our season in the spring."
This was the first win for OSU against Texas A&M since 2014. The Cowgirls have now won four meets in a row against the Aggies at home.
The Cowgirls ended the fall season on a two-meet win streak, with the Cowgirls staying undefeated at home. Dating back to last year, the Cowgirls have won seven in a row at Totusek Arena.
The Cowgirls will take some time off and they will resume play Feb. 3, 2018 when No. 4 Auburn visits Stillwater.
