Cowboy Football Sets Academic Record, Leads League With 20 First-Team Academic All-Big 12 Honorees

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football program led the Big 12 and set a school record with 20 first-team Academic All-Big 12 selections, it was announced today. Two of the Cowboy selections, Britton Abbott and Chad Whitener, were honored with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
The three highest totals for first-team Academic All-Big 12 selections in Oklahoma State football history have come in the last three seasons, as OSU had 13 players honored in 2015, 12 in 2016 and now 20 in 2017.
Several prominent names dot the Academic All-Big 12 squad for OSU this year, highlighted by first-team honorees Justice Hill, Chris Lacy, Brad Lundblade, Dillon Stoner and Chad Whitener.
Lacy, Lundblade and Kirk Tucker all earned the third first-team Academic All-Big 12 honor of their respective careers, with Whitener, Abbott and Matt Ammendola all securing Academic All-Big 12 recognition for the second time.
OSU's 25 overall Academic All-Big 12 selections this year broke the existing program record of 22, set in 2015, and the Cowboys' 66 overall Academic All-Big 12 honorees the last three years ranks OSU second in the league during that time span, behind only Kansas State.
To earn a spot on the first-team Academic All-Big 12 squad, one must maintain a 3.20 or higher GPA either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.10 GPA. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
