Cross Country Teams Move Up in Pre-Nationals Rankings

STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State men's cross country team moved up to No. 18 in the week seven United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national rankings, which were released on Monday.
After being ranked at No. 19 in the last national poll, the Cowboys moved up a spot after taking second in the NCAA Midwest Regional this past weekend, narrowly falling to No. 13 Iowa State by five points.
As accustomed this season, senior Hassan Abdi was the Cowboys' highest finisher in the 10K race. He finished second overall in 29:11.28 behind Illinois' Jonathan Davis. Also in the top 10, Luis Martinez finished 10th overall on the chilly day in Ames, Iowa.
The Cowgirls jumped to No. 23 in the rankings after receiving votes in the week six poll. The Cowgirls also finished second at the Midwest Regional, qualifying for the NCAA Championships this weekend.
The women's team ran a gutsy, aggressive race en route to its top five all finishing in the top 30. Led by an unexpected Kaytlyn Larson who finished 13th overall, the Cowgirls scored 103 points in the meet. Senior Molly Sughroue was the Cowgirls' second-highest finisher, running the 6K race in 20:38 and taking 17th overall.
The teams will look to carry the momentum into the grand finale of the cross country season. The NCAA Championships will take place on Nov. 18 at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
