October 06, 2017 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Several past and present members of the Oklahoma State wrestling team will compete for a spot on the U23 World Team this weekend at the U23 Freestyle World Team Trials in Rochester, Minn.
Â
Former Cowboy Anthony Collica, as well as current Pokes Daton Fix, Gary Wayne Harding and Boo Lewallen will all be vying for spots on the squad, which heads to Bydgoszcz, Poland for the U23 World Championships Nov. 21-26.
Â
Competing at 57 kg, Fix will be going for his second World Championship of the summer. The Cowboy freshman became the first OSU wrestler to take gold at the Junior World Championships in August, outscoring his five opponents by a combined score of 53-1 with the lone opposing score being awarded on a step out in the final match. Fix also helped lead the United States to its first team title at the event since 1984.
Â
Coming off a redshirt year, Harding will also be wrestling at 57 kg. Harding is 43-26 during his career at OSU. The Collinsville, Okla., native is a two-time NCAA qualifier.
Â
Lewallen, who will be competing at 65 kg, had a breakout season in his redshirt freshman year last season, going 11-2 overall. After a year off due to injury, the Yukon, Okla., product impressed at the Reno Tournament of Champions, going 5-0 with wins over No. 15 Javier Gasca of Michigan State and No. 9 Bryce Meredith to claim the title at 141 in his first collegiate event.
Â
Collica will wrestle at 70kg this weekend. The former Cowboy was a 2016 All-American and four-time NCAA qualifier during his time in Stillwater. As a senior, the Solon, Ohio, native was ranked as high as No. 2 in the country at 149 pounds and also became the eighth Cowboy in school history to win four Big 12 titles during his career. Collica's 107 wins rank 33rd in program history.
