Homecoming With The Bears

STILLWATER – Homecoming is a big, big deal at Oklahoma State. It's a week-long celebration that is steeped in tradition and brings people back to Stillwater in massive numbers. Like Garth Brooks and cheese fries, it's a long-standing staple of the OSU experience.
Of course, Homecoming week all builds up to the annual Homecoming football game and in five of the past six years and in eight of the last 10 seasons, the Cowboys have sent their Orange-clad fans home buzzing after Homecoming wins.
OSU has outscored the opposition by about two touchdowns per game in its last 10 Homecoming games, highlighted by a 59-24 win over Baylor in 2011. Speaking of the Bears, they are this year's Homecoming opponent, a role they have played three times before; in 1972, 2008 and 2011. All three of those games resulted in Oklahoma State wins.
In the 2008 game, Dez Bryant went off. He had 11 of OSU's 13 receptions and 212 of the Cowboys' 238 receiving yards that day to lift OSU to its first 7-0 start to a season since 1945. That Homecoming win came the week after the Cowboys upset No. 3 Missouri in Columbia. As a result of the previous week's seismic win, many observers expected an emotional letdown from the Pokes against Baylor.
Though the Bears got on the board first in the game, most any concern of a letdown were gone by halftime, when OSU held a 28-6 lead going into the locker room. The Cowboys scored touchdowns on four straight possessions during one stretch of the first half to create all the separation they needed.
The 2011 Homecoming win over Baylor was one of the most memorable moments in a season full of memorable moments, as the Cowboys roared to a 49-3 advantage through three quarters before the Bears were able to start scoring. By then, the game had long been decided.
OSU rushed for a staggering 327 yards in the contest and averaged 9.5 yards per offensive snap as part of its dominating win. The Cowboy defense forced Baylor into committing five turnovers and shut the Bears down on two fourth-down attempts for what amounted to an additional two turnovers that were not counted among the five OSU takeaways.
Baylor was able to move the ball against the Cowboy defense that day, but couldn't turn yards into points, leading to this final summary from The Oklahoman's John Helsley: "…the Bears brought the nation's No. 2 offense into Boone Pickens Stadium and couldn't find the end zone until a large chunk of fans were inhaling cheese fries at Joe's."
