What the Media Are Saying After OSU vs. West Virginia
October 29, 2017 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football continued its pursuit of a Big 12 title Saturday, as the Cowboys knocked off No. 22 West Virginia in Morgantown, 50-39, to pull into a four-way tie at the top of the Big 12 Conference standings.Â
OSU's (7-1; 4-1 Big 12) win Saturday wasn't without drama, but the Cowboys came away with the win thanks in part to true freshman J.D. King's performance. The Tulsa World's Mark Cooper discussed King's performance, saying "While Justice Hill missed more than half of Saturday's game with an injury from which he eventually returned, King became Oklahoma State's bellcow — and likely saved the Cowboys offense in a 50-39 victory."
Along with profiling King's impressive day, Cooper noted that Saturday's matchup featured another stand-out performance from the OSU defense, which limited West Virginia to just 62 yards rushing and held one of the nation's premier passing attacks to 285 yards through the air. Cooper wrote that after Saturday's defensive shift, "The Cowboys might have the defensive difference makers to win the Big 12."
One of the key stories coming out of Saturday's contest was the play of Heisman candidate Mason Rudolph, who did not practice last week after what head coach Mike Gundy called getting "dinged" at Texas last weekend. Rudolph broke several long-standing OSU records Saturday, including earning his 29th win as the Cowboys' starting quarterback to surpass his head coach's previous mark.
The Oklahoman's Scott Wright profiled Rudolph's mental preparation throughout the week, despite not taking reps in practice. He also noted how the coaching staff still felt extremely confident in Rudolph's ability to perform Saturday thanks to his wealth of experience behind center.
OSU offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich put it best, saying that Rudolph is "a guy that has a lot of reps under his belt, so he's like a duck in water as far as that goes."
Berry Tramel, also of The Oklahoman, looked at the other side of the ball and pinpointed the growth of young cornerback A.J. Green, who helped limit one of the nation's most potent passing attacks yesterday. Tramel painted the picture of Green's second interception Saturday, and noted how the OSU defensive backs have become part of the defense's backbone in recent weeks.
Along with recapping Saturday's win in Morgantown, media also began peeking ahead to next Saturday's Bedlam matchup in Stillwater. Kickoff at Boone Pickens Stadium is currently scheduled for 3 p.m. on Fox Sports 1.
