What the Media Are Saying After OSU vs. Texas
October 22, 2017 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football team navigate the treachorous waters of the Big 12 Conference Saturday, as the Cowboys pulled out a 13-10 overtime victory against Texas. The win marked the fifth-straight occassion that OSU (6-1; 3-1 Big 12) defeated the Longhorns in Austin, which is the longest winning streak by any team on Texas' home turf.
The Tulsa World's Bill Haisten described the game as a "festival of weirdness", but also went on to discuss how it was the OSU defense that carried the Cowboys to victory Saturday. Haisten noted head coach Mike Gundy's praise for the Cowboy defense that gave up just 1.3 yards per carry against the Longhorns, as well as Gundy's comments about Saturday being one of the best defensive performances during his tenure as head coach in Stillwater.
Meanwhile, The Oklahoman's John Helsley summarized the moment for Ramon Richards, who came up with the game-clinching interception during Texas' first possession in overtime. Helsley wrote that "...in the end, the Cowboys needed one more play. And Richards delivered."
Helsley also mentioned Richards' importance to the OSU defense on the play prior to the interception, as he held Texas wide receiver Jerrod Heard to a 1-yard gain after catching a swing pass from quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Richards, a San Antonio, Texas, native, had several members of his family in town for the game, making his clutch catch that much more special of a moment.
Berry Tramel, also of The Oklahoman, made note of the game's important numbers. Two of the most notable to come out of Saturday's contest were 7 - the number of times that the Cowboys have started at least 6-1 during the Mike Gundy era - and 28 - the number of wins for Mason Rudolph as the starting quarterback, tying him with his head coach for the most in school history.
Oklahoma State will face another tough road test this coming week, as the Cowboys head to West Virginia for a clash with the Mountaineers in Morgantown. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Milan Puskar Stadium.
