STILLWATER – Oklahoma State continues Big 12 play this weekend with a Homecoming showdown at Boone Pickens Stadium against Baylor.
The Bears come into this week winless so far this season, but the win-loss record doesn't tell the full story.
Baylor, according to SB Nation's Football Study Hall, fields one of the nation's most explosive offenses. The Bears' 1.61 IsoPPP (equivalent points per play on successful offensive plays) ranks second in the country. They also hold a 1.16 IsoPPP average, which is good for 13th in the country.
The Baylor offense is led by quarterback Zach Smith, who stepped in three weeks ago and turned the offense around. In those three weeks, Smith has brought life to the Bear's offense, including a 463-yard, four-touchdown day against Oklahoma three weeks ago.
Along with Smith, Baylor fields several talented skill players. This includes tight end Jordan Feuerbacher, who is on the watch list for the Mackey Award, as well as wide receiver Denzel Mims, who is on the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award.
Mims has been an explosive playmaker for the Bears in 2017 thus far, hauling in 25 passes for 533 yards and seven touchdowns. His 533 receiver yards and 106.6 receiver yards per game average both rank third in the Big 12 behind only James Washington (647/129.4) and Texas Tech's Keke Coutee (586/117.2). Meanwhile, his seven touchdowns trail only West Virginia's David Sills V (9) for the most by a Big 12 receiver this season.
Oklahoma State leads the all-time series between the two schools, 19-16, and the matchup has been a back-and-forth affair throughout head coach Mike Gundy's tenure in Stillwater. During Gundy's time at the helm, OSU is 7-5 against the Bears, but the Cowboys have lost each of the last three meetings between the two schools.
Aside from an electric offense, Baylor's defense has been stout in the red zone this season, allowing just eight touchdowns in 19 opponent redzone trips. The Bears also lead the Big 12 in tackles for loss with 37.0 and are fourth in the league with 11.0 sacks recorded.
Saturday's Homecoming contest at Boone Pickens Stadium has the potential to be one of college football's most exciting matchups of the weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Fox Sports 1.
