STILLWATER – Oklahoma State freshman running back Justice Hill is one of 34 players in the country who was named to the 2016 Sound Mind Sound Body/FWAA Freshman All-America Team, the Football Writers Association of America announced Monday.
Hill, who will potentially lead all freshmen nationally in rushing yardage this season, is one of three players from the Big 12 on the team. He joins Ohio State's Mike Weber and Kentucky's Benny Snell as running back selections.
With 1,142 rushing yards on the year, Hill broke the OSU season record for most rushing yards by a freshman that was set by Mike Hamilton (961) in 2005 and the OSU true freshman season mark that was set by Thurman Thomas (843) in 1984.
In addition to being the only OSU freshman to ever surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a season, he is the only freshman in school history to rush for 100 yards in six games, as no other Cowboy freshman has done it more than three times. All six of his 100-yard games came against Big 12 opponents, with the exception of one 100-yard game in the Alamo Bowl against Colorado, and those six 100-yard rushing games rank as the second-most among all Big 12 players this season.
With a career-high 162 rushing yards in OSU's win over Kansas, Hill tallied the second-highest rushing total ever for an OSU true freshman, trailing only Thomas's 206 rushing yards against Kansas State in 1984. His average of 105.9 rushing yards per game (on 5.8 yards per carry) in Big 12 play ranked third in the league and he's the only freshman who ranked in the top 10 rushers of the Big 12 this season.
Hill was earlier named the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and the AP Big 12 Newcomer of the Year for his outstanding efforts. He was also the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for his performances against Baylor, Texas and Kansas.
