Edwards Earns Big 12 and USTFCCCA Athlete of the Week Honors
January 18, 2017 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's Kaela Edwards received Athlete of the Week honors from the Big 12 and the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this week for her record-breaking performance in the 1,000-meter run at the Holiday Inn Invite.
Edwards was named as the Big 12's Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week as well as the USTFCCCA's Division I Female Athlete of the Week after breaking the 1,000-meter collegiate record in 2:40.79.
Along with winning the race, Edwards outran two All-Americans in teammates Chelsea Jarvis and Savannah Camacho. Jarvis, the second-place finisher, finished in 2:48.00 and Camacho's 2:49.38 got her third. Both times were personal bests and more than nine seconds better than the fourth-place finisher, putting Edwards nearly 18 seconds ahead of her closest competitor who wasn't in orange.
The previous record was set by Villanova's Angel Piccirillo in February of 2016.
The national and conference honors adds to the Cowgirl senior's already impressive trophy cabinet which includes an NCAA title for the women's mile, three first-team All-America honors, four Big 12 titles and the 2016 Indoor Female Athlete of the Year award from the USTFCCCA for the Midwest region.
This is the first Track and Field Athlete of the Week award for Oklahoma State in 2017.
