What the Media Are Saying: Several Moments Highlight OSU’s Rout of SLU
September 04, 2016 | Cowboy Football
The Oklahoma State football program opened its season with a 61-7 win over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday.
Several factors played into the Cowboys' dominating win. The Oklahoman's John Helsey listed his key moments in the game, starting with this one:
"Southeastern Louisiana halted the Cowboys on the game's opening possession. But it only delayed — momentarily — the day's runaway win. On Zach Sinor's punt, Lions return man Jawun Dickey unwisely tried to field the boot at his own 4, all but whiffing on the catch, with Madre Harper recovering in the end zone for a touchdown. For Harper, a true freshman on the first play of his career, it was an instant memory. For the Cowboys, it was a 7-0 launching pad to the 61-7 rout."
Helsley went on to mention wide receiver Jhajuan Seales stepping up as he "announced himself as a big-play threat with a turning, leaping 24-yard touchdown catch from Mason Rudolph in the first quarter" and Rudolph's scrambling touchdown pass to Seales later in the third quarter.
The Tulsa World's Mark Cooper also noted Rudolph's mobility in his postgame observations. Cooper wrote:
"The final play of Mason Rudolph's 2016 season debut showed off a forgotten — or perhaps newly acquired — dimension of his game: Elusiveness.
"Rolling to his right, Rudolph escaped the grasp one would-be tackler, then another, then another, before lofting a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jhajuan Seales in the back of the end zone in the third quarter Saturday.
"Rudolph's Oklahoma State teammates called him an athlete. The junior quarterback did work this summer with strength and conditioning coach Rob Glass to improve his core strength and his leg strength."
Cooper also pointed to one of the Cowboy fan base's favorite plays of the day, saying, "The Boone Pickens Stadium crowd was delighted later when Barry J. Sanders broke off a 57-yard punt return, getting tackled just shy of the goal line."
The Tulsa World writer might have foreshadowed the play in his game breakdown earlier in the week, saying Sanders "could be a dynamic option" in the return game.
Kyle Fredrickson's first mention in his game recap for The Oklahoman was of senior running back Chris Carson's opening offensive touchdown. Fredrickson said Carson "took the handoff right, bolted toward the near sideline, cut upfield and met a defender. He didn't go down.
"Oklahoma State's starting running back spun counterclockwise nine yards from the end zone, stayed on his feet, and charged near the goal line where a Southeastern Louisiana tackler wrapped his legs. He didn't go down.
"Carson's left shoulder turned battering ram, his feet churning through contact, and he dove across the white line. The Cowboys scored their first offensive touchdown of the year. Carson flexed on orange paint while teammates mobbed the second-year junior college transfer."
As dominating of a performance the Cowboys had Saturday and with as many significant plays they had, they now turn their eyes toward next week's matchup with Central Michigan in Boone Pickens Stadium.
