Cowboy Cross Country in Top-10 for Third Week
September 27, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – For the third-straight week, the Oklahoma State Cowboy cross country team remained in the top-10 of the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll after claiming the Cowboy Jamboree title for the seventh time in as many years.
The Pokes dropped one spot to No. 10 in part to breakout performances from BYU and Portland, two teams that went into the week at No. 12 and 19, but are now fourth and seventh, respectively.
The drop in the polls didn't affect the Cowboys rank within the Midwest region or the Big 12, as OSU's top-ranked streak in the Midwest extended to 47 weeks, with previous No. 5 Iowa State jumping to second in the region.
Iowa State also made a jump in the national poll, joining the Cowboys in the top-25 as the second-highest ranked Big 12 team behind OSU. Texas also made its season debut in the rankings, claiming the No. 30 spot after weeks of receiving votes. In-state rival and previous No. 19 Oklahoma dropped out, but is still receiving votes, adding to potential drama at the Big 12 Championships in just over a month.
Sylvester Barus won the Cowboy Jamboree individual title by topping All-America favorite Luke Traynor of Tulsa, among others. For his impressive OSU debut, Barus received a nod in FloTrack's top-25 male runners list, slotting in at No. 21. Barus is the only OSU athlete on either list.
For the Cowgirls, their second-place finish at the Jamboree didn't hurt their regional ranking, holding onto the No. 1 spot, but nationally, OSU fell five spots to 13.
Although, it is the Cowgirls' lowest rank of the season, the OSU women still lead the Big 12 ahead of No. 23 Iowa State, No. 26 Kansas and Texas (RV).
OSU's next competition will be on the road at the Penn State Invitational in State College, Pennsylvania, Oct. 14. It will be the last regular season meet before the Cowboys and Cowgirls defend their conference sweep from a season ago at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas, Oct. 29.
