Hovland, Ventura Wrap Up Play At WATC

RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico – Oklahoma State's duo of Viktor Hovland and Kristoffer Ventura led Norway to a top-five showing this week at the World Amateur Team Championships contested at Mayakoba El Camaleón Golf Club and Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club.
In the team race, Norway finished in fifth place with a 17-under total of 555. Australia won the event with a 534 tally.
Hovland fired a bogey-free 65 during Saturday's final round to move into the top 10 in the individual standings at 276, 10-under par, tying him for seventh place. After opening with a 71 during his first round, he followed with consecutive 70s before his 6-under final round.
The Cowboy freshman opened his fourth round with four consecutive pars before carding a pair of birdies at the fifth and sixth. He moved to 3-under par on the day with a birdie at the 10th and added two more at the 12th and 13th before carding his fourth birdie of the inward nine at the 17th hole.
Ventura closed with a 71 to finish with a 7-under score of 279. The junior opened with a 70 before carding back-to-back 69s.
For Ventura, the start marked the third time he has competed at the WATC. In 2012, he posted a 5-under total of 209 to tie for 13th place. The 2014 tournament saw him tie for 51st place with a 280 score.
Conducted by the International Golf Federation, the World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur golf competition rotated among three geographic zone of the world: Asia-Pacific, American and European-African.
Each team in the event has two or three players and plays 18 holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each tam constitutes the team score for the round. The 72-hole total is the team's score for the championship.
