Gundy Recaps Pitt, Breaks Down Baylor on Coach’s Show
September 21, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy sat down with Cowboy radio voice Dave Hunziker Tuesday night at Chick-Fil-A for his weekly coach's show. Gundy and Hunziker discussed last Saturday's win over Pittsburgh, broke down the standouts on the scout team and previewed this Saturday's game against Baylor. Listen to the full show below.
On Saturday's win over Pittsburgh:
"That was a good win for us. It was a fun game for everybody. It was a really exciting college football game between pretty evenly-matched teams. We had some explosive players that were able to convert big plays, and they did the same. We were concerned about their running back, and he made plays. They have a nice little scheme with what they're doing with their speed sweep, but we were able to come back and counter against their really heavy run defense and throw the ball accurately over the top of the defense. Our receivers played very well, obviously James (Washington) played well, Jhajuan Seales played well all-around, (Chris) Lacy played well. Rennie Childs showed up. I said in the postgame that I was really excited for Rennie that he was able to make some plays. We need him to play well all year. Justice (Hill) made a few runs, which gives us a little bit of depth at that position. We blocked better up front. We still have a long ways to go, but we're further along after game three with our run blocking schemes than we were last year.
"Defensively, we made big plays at times. Obviously, we got a key turnover. We just kind of hung in there and made plays. Zach Sinor punted really well, and did a great job in target punting. It was just a great college football game."
On players from the scout team that are standing out to him in practice:
"Our young offensive line seems to be doing a good job. Devin Harper, the linebacker is doing a good job. Running back L.D. (Brown) is making some plays, and Tyron Johnson, the new wideout that transferred in is making some plays. We've got some guys down there that are showing up."
On Baylor:
"They look very similar…Scheme-wise, they're the exact same. Why they've started slow in a couple of games, I'm not sure. Their quarterback is the same player they've had. They have some new linemen, and their backs are not the same guys. They still have a couple of the same wideouts, but the scheme is the same.
"Defensively, they're running the same stuff. Phil Bennett's been there forever. They're a three-down team for the most part... They aren't going to play like Pitt did. Pitt was more down in there. These guys will back up a little bit. They'll have some of the same concepts, but I don't think they'll get down in there like Pitt did.
"On special teams, they've always been pretty simple. They put a lot of speed on special teams, and they just try to get a ball in a guy's hands that they know can make plays. If they get the right punt or kick, they'll roll with it, and if they don't, they don't care. They'll just line up and play offense."
