STILLWATER – Oklahoma State gave up a pair of late goals before a penalty kick in the first overtime period spelled doom as the Cowgirls dropped a 3-2 match to UCF Friday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Haley Woodard scored a pair of goals for the Cowgirls — her first-career multi-goal game — but it wasn't enough as OSU fell to 2-2-1 on the season. UCF scored twice in the final 7:38 of regulation before recording the game winner just under six minutes into overtime as the Knights improved to 2-3-0.
"Disappointment. To be 2-0 up with 10 minutes left and lose just can't happen — it's not good enough from all of us," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael.
OSU built a lead thanks to Woodard. The sophomore got the Cowgirls on the board in the 21st minute when, following a flurry of shots by Courtney Dike, two of which were blocked, Woodard found the ball and sent a shot into the back of the net to put the home team up 1-0.
That lead doubled in the 75th minute. This time it was Julia Lenhardt sending a beautiful long pass ahead to Woodard, who did the rest as she beat her defender and sent a low shot to the far post, with her third goal of the season putting OSU up by a 2-0 margin.
Things began to unravel for OSU in the last 10 minutes, however.
UCF got on the board in the 83rd minute when Kayla Adamek sent a cross into the box that Carol Rodrigues was able to deliver from eight-yards out to make it 2-1.
Just five minutes later, with 2:37 left in regulation, the Knights would get the equalizer when Saga Fredriksson sent the ball in from close range following a furious scramble in the box.
Tied 2-2 going into overtime, Carmichael's message to his team was simple.
"We just told them, 'Hey let's go fix it. We know we messed up and let them back in, but we've got to find some energy and emotion and try and go fix it,'" Carmichael said.
OSU was the first to create a scoring chance when the Cowgirls won a corner kick that Anna Beffer sent into the box, but Marlo Zoller's subsequent shot attempt sailed high over the mark.
Just over a minute later, the Knights were awarded a penalty kick when an attacker was taken down in the box. Morgan Ferrara stepped up for the attempt and delivered a shot past OSU goalie Michela Ongaro to complete the comeback win.
OSU returns to action Sunday when the Cowgirls host No. 5 Florida at noon.
"We have to forget about this game. We have to realize what we did wrong, we have to get over it and we have to get ready for the game on Sunday," Woodard said.
